5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Start to a New Series!

Ok, I will be the first to admit I was very worried about this spin off series from our beloved detectives, Aslan and Quaid. How was this going to work? How can I read about others in the police department that are not Valor and Doyle when I love them so much? But I should know better by now and trust that the amazing talents of this author would not let me down. Tallus and Diem were fantastic! First, their chemistry was off the charts. I strongly recommend reading the short prequel before this book so you really get a feel about the two of them. Second, the underlying mystery plot of the case Diem was working was great, always keeping me guessing. Third, my heart just broke for Diem. The man just needs someone to love him and show him physical contact and intimacy is ok. Fourth, I adored Tallus. He was fiery and confident and just perfect for Diem. Not many people would understand Diem's closed off nature and be so kind and supportive. Fifth we get to spend time again with Alsan, Quaid, Fox, and Ruiz, which was a treat!
This is definitely a slow burn romance with more development to come in future books. While I'm eager for those developments to ocurr, I am very glad things were not rushed in book 1. It would have been too fast, too soon for Diem to let Tallus in. They made tremendous progress in this book that was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Every small act was a struggle for Diem, but it's clear he cares for Tallus and just doesn't know how to show it. The small moments of intimacy they do have are wonderful. I could feel Diem's apprehension and struggles as he tried to push down years of trauma and let Tallus in, it left me eagerly awaiting the next one!

I’m a big fan of Nikki’s Valor and Doyle series so I was excited for this. It started off a bit slow. A little boring at first, but I stuck with it and ended up enjoying it. It was a good mystery and Tallus and Diem are an interesting opposites-attract pairing. It was a good start and I’m definitely going to read the next one.

Nick Russo’s narration was good. Maybe a little over-the-top on Diem’s tough guy voice, but otherwise great. He’s one of my favorite narrators so I forgive him for that choice.

Nicky James does a fabulous job of taking you on a journey with realistic characters who are far from perfect and making you care for them and be invested in them. I loved the journey I went on in Valor and Doyle, so I was excited to start this new one. I read the prequel before this came out and couldn't wait to get to know these new characters.
Diem is an interesting character right off the bat. So is Tallus, but we'll get to him. Diem is complicated and broken. He doesn't see himself in any positive way. It shows not only in his thoughts but his behavior and actions as well. I appreciate that the book shows he's getting therapy or at least has in the past but still struggles. Nicky James does a good job showing that wanting to change takes time. I look forward to seeing how Diem changes for the better.
I have to admit that I already liked Tallus a bit more than Diem just from reading the prequel. He can be funny and stubborn, but in this book, I related a lot to him. I suffer from migraines, and we find out that Tallus also suffers from them as well. At times, I did get annoyed with Tallus as I felt he pushed too much, but eventually understood that sometimes it was needed. I'm interested in seeing him grow and the steps he makes to mend the bridge with Ruiz.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I recommend it not only to those who are fans of Valor and Doyle but also to those who just enjoy a good book that is well written. I do have to say that you really should read Valor and Doyle first, though.

This is a spin off from the Valor and Doyle series, which isn't required before reading this book, but is HIGHLY recommended.
I absolutely loved the characters in this story. Diem is a private investigator with little to no people skills. Tallus is a nosy flirt that has forced his way into Diem's life determined to help him. Together they work to uncover something bigger than they could have imagined. I really just want to wrap Diem in a hug and never let him go. The poor guy has so many issues that even Tallus has a hard time handling them. Seeing all the old crew again was great too! Valor and Doyle pop in and out of the story along with some of the other fabulous characters.
I want the best, happiest ever after for Diem and Tallus but unfortunately we'll have to wait for it. This book ends on a cliffhanger and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book.
