About this item
The sharp and surprising true story of a woman who finally sets out to understand her past, and the mother she had one day hoped to forget. Full of unexpected twists and unbelievable revelations, American Daughter is an immersive memoir that will have you on the edge of your seat to the very last minute.
For years, Stephanie Plymale, successful CEO and interior designer, kept her past a fiercely guarded secret. Only her husband knew that her childhood was fraught with every imaginable hardship: neglect, hunger, poverty, homelessness, truancy, foster homes, a harrowing lack of medical care, and worse. Stephanie, in turn, knew very little about the past of her mother, who was in and out of jails and psych wards for most of Stephanie's formative years. All this changed when a series of shocking revelations forced Stephanie to revisit her tortured past and revise the meaning of every aspect of her compromised childhood.
American Daughter is the extraordinary true story of a young girl growing up on the wrong side of the American Dream. Stephanie has slept in blankets on the floor of crowded apartments, lived in the back seat of a car with her siblings, and spent decades looking over her shoulder at a mother who might just as easily hug or harm her. American Daughter is at once a moving account of a troubled mother-daughter relationship and a meditation on resilience, transcendence, and ultimately, redemption.

A life-changing phone call from her mother becomes the catalyst beginning the quest for reconciliation and finding answers to all of the “whys” in her life only her mentally ill mother can unlock for her.
The author takes her readers on an empowering journey to uncover the truth. Through a tidbit of information offered up by her mother pointing to a newspaper article from the 1950’s, the answers to all the “whys” in Stephanie Thornton Plymale’s life begin to unfold right before her in such a dazzling spectacular fashion not even a Hollywood script writer could have imagined.
In her desperate search to find healing and reconciliation with her dying mother, she ends up finding so much more...
This “must read” book shows us the undeniable healing power of forgiveness. The author’s stylistic writing choice of telling her story using the “back-and-forth” between present day life and childhood memories was particularly effective because it emphasized what had happened to her in the past was still a constant disruption infiltrating into all facets of her life as a wife, mother, daughter, CEO of a company, and as a person as a whole. It is also a jolting narrative which forces us to take a look at our own shortcomings and begin to question what we value as a society. It teaches us we cannot afford to look away when it comes to our most vulnerable who cannot speak for nor help themselves. Otherwise, we play a part in holding the doors open for shattered childhoods, exponential pain, and multigenerational suffering.
Thank you Stephanie Thornton Plymale for gifting us with your story. Your life is truly an example that God has a plan for each and every one of us and that he works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). You teach us the undeniable healing power of forgiveness, the beauty of steadfast love, and the true importance of family.
Your American Daughter readers will come away with inspiration, empowerment and more importantly the courage for their own lives to “rise above it all.”
I don’t know even where to begin to explain how much I love this book! What an amazing, gut wrenching story that is filled with so much heart and soul. The writer(s)
give such a great visual from the very beginning. I immediately could see this as a movie, even imagining certain songs for different scenes! It is far more than a story of rags to riches or overcoming a traumatic childhood. Ms Plymale leads us by example of the true human spirit. She not only is a survivor, suffering the unimaginable, or person defined by her obstacles, she is a woman with soul, who shows us how to love and forgive even when others seemingly don’t deserve it. It is after all, the love and empathy that opens the doors, answers the long awaited questions that have plagued her life. The reveal of what Ms. Plymale finds out about her past will have you in disbelief, thinking this only happens in movies. That’s what makes this such a great story, because it is real and despite all the hardship and pain, she over comes it all. Without giving the the whole story away, it’s obvious the longing and acceptance of her broken relationship with her mother is restored, but what I also really appreciate is her taking this knowledge to the next level and bringing more awareness to mental illness. Understanding her mother’s past gave her the empathy to forgive. Bravo, Stephanie Thornton Plymale, your story has the power to change lives! I cried and cheered many tears for you. Thank you for reminding us that everyone has a story to tell, that many have and are still, fighting very hard battles. It is compassion and understanding that can be first steps in healing. Thank you for showing us how to look deeper at others problems, rather than us just be a victim. I try to imagine if you never conducted those “interviews”, what you would never have found, and more importantly how you and your mother’s story would end. God bless you for your courage, I can’t wait to hear and read more!
