5.0 out of 5 stars Current events examined in historical context

Each piece is an examination of an event, a released book, or a personal story told wonderfully in historical context. The pieces flow with ease that invites the reader into the story that they have lived through themselves helping to provide the reader with a broader and more complete picture of the subject at hand. One who has read, heard, or seen an event on television, social media, radio, or through personal contacts may feel they got the events story straight. Reading Lepore can demonstrate that a more complex understanding can bring the compexities of the event to life.

Divergent backgrounds and views of the world; she examines in depth, stirs the pot, offers an opinion and moves forward. A provocative historian, want to disagree with her? Best do your homework.

I gave THE DEADLINE to my husband for Christmas. He loves it. He has read other books by Ms. Lapore and enjoyed them, so I figured he would like this one too, and he does.

Jill Lepore from "A" is for American analysis the reasons & wherefores of our native "English Language" among turbuelent times in the growth of the future Nation, beginning with a focus on Noah Webster's first American Dictionary & proceeding through further technological and human interactions which made our history (& that of the various waves of immigration) & our unique form of American English,
Her work is deeply researched yet ever bit of that research is presented in eminentily readable & comprehensible prose.

I have been a fan of Lepore’s since my interest in New England Colonial history led me to read her first book “In the Name of War”about King Philip’s War. I have since read every one of her books. She never lets me down. Crisp, clear mastry of the English language which she clearly demonstrates in this wonderful collection of essays. And where else would you learn what “a quiver of prickles” is?

I stopped my subscription to the New Yorker some years ago, so many of the essays are new to me. But I enjoyed reading again those from long ago, so the book gets five stars from me.
