About this item
An enemies-to-friends-to-lovers lesbian romance about finding heart, hope, and second chances you never thought you'd have.
Stella Carter is a former criminal prosecutor and new widow facing down middle age alone in Los Angeles. Without being a prestigious lawyer and someone's wife, she's not sure who she is anymore or where her life is headed.
When she invites her niece to move in with her, Stella accidentally reconnects with her former colleague, LAPD Captain Elizabeth Murphy. The woman is beautiful but cold; someone she was always at odds with on the job.
Surprisingly, Stella finds herself leaning on her niece and Elizabeth more and more to navigate her loss. But as time goes on, Stella can't keep seeing Elizabeth and pretending she's not attracted to her. Besides, there's absolutely no way Elizabeth feels the same way. Is there?

It's a well written story that pulls you in and makes you feel like you know the two women personally. Well done!
It's a book about grief, love, and love during/after grief. It's really well written and engaging. You will feel like the chapters are melting one into the other and before you know it you are dome.
The main character, Stella, is a over fifty-one year old ex-ADA dealing with grief and loss after the death of her husband. She can't even get out of bed until her niece, Addie, waltz into her life to give her support, and through her Stella reconnects with the cool-collected, yet warm and kind, Elizabeth Murphy.
The portrayal of Stella's depressive episodes is realistic without being melodramatic at all. The way she reconnects with her niece, Addie, is really touching. It's a great show of healthy familial love. Plus Addie is the type of young adult character that is funny and clever without getting into the reader's nerve at all. And Elizabeth is absolutely the right fit for Stella. Their chemistry is wonderful. And yes, the love scenes are great!

This lesbian romance novel is filled with believable characters set in a California setting. While yes there is talk of death and grief within the book, it serves the story's setting rather than overshadowing it. Going through my own grief during the time I read it, this book has helped me process some difficult emotions and realize that we aren't alone in how we feel about death.
I've not read many romance novels yet, but this book was a wonderful introduction to the lesbian romance genre and set the bar extremely high for the next book I pick up.
I found myself turning to Emily's second novel as I did not find many others out there that matched the same type of comfortable storytelling as Honey in the Marrow. All in all, I look forward to reading more from Emily Waters.
I especially enjoyed the character LAPD Captain Elizabeth Murphy. So much depth to this character. I felt like I wanted her in every scene. I think she was supposed to come across as cold in the beginning of the relationship with the other MC Stella Carter (since this was written in Stella's POV), but I felt that was a shortcoming of Stella's to feel that way. Liz's compassion was a source of healing for those important to her. It takes a special person to be able to handle having a dangerous job, be a good at it and lead others; to go through a difficult divorce with an alcoholic/gambler husband; raise 3 children and still have something to give others.
While there was a lot of angst in this book to get to the point where the two MCs could finally acknowledge to each other their attraction, it was so worth the ride to get there!
I highly recommend what appears to be Emily's first published book and send my congrats on an awesome effort! I look forward to her next book!
