About this item

When Peter Mayle and his wife traded England's long, gray winters and damp summers for life in southern France, they entered an enchanting, wonderful, sometimes bewildering world. Now, share their adventures, pleasures, and frustrations: the joys and occasional hazards of wining and dining in France, taking part in goat races, attending a Pavorotti concert under the stars - and much more. Meet Provence's unique characters: a wary truffle hunter, a gourmet in a track suit, the wise and crafty Massot - and many more.

Funny, touching, endearing - Peter Mayle's Provence proves the adage that while you may not be able to escape from it all, you sure can have fun trying.

1.0 out of 5 stars A year in Provence?

I ordered a year in Provence and I got 25 years in Provence. Not what I wanted or ordered so I would say to be careful before you purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Abridged version is such a loss

I am incredibly disappointed that 1) I did not realize this audio version is abridged and 2) an unabridged version seems to be unavailable. At just over 200 pages, and with Mayle's colorful characters and descriptions so much a part of his storytelling, this book deserves to be presented in its full form.

I don't understand why this book was so popular. I think I would have appreciated it more if I knew more about why they chose to move rather than just continue visiting Provence. I also would have like to know what they were hoping to gain by moving there. The descriptions of the food and people are well written but I did not find them compelling.
