What a great book. I love that Cheslie's mom finished it and tied it all up. I gave it to my mom to read too and she loved it. Its heartbreaking but a very important read.

Love the book. Full of emotions but open wide for knowledge on mental health. Very impressed.

This book brilliantly captures the raw vulnerability of both Cheslie and April. I was captivated by the openness and honesty from both perspectives, beautifully conveyed through exquisite writing. While deeply poignant and tragic, it serves as a stark reminder that external appearances can be deceiving. I truly loved it!

"By the Time You Read This" is a poignant and heartbreaking narrative that unfolds in two parts, offering a glimpse into the life and struggles of former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, as well as the aftermath of her tragic suicide through the eyes of her mother, April Simpkins.
Cheslie Kryst's story, told in her own words, is a testament to her remarkable achievements and the internal battles she faced. From the triumphs of winning Miss USA and embarking on a successful career to the depths of heartbreak and depression, Cheslie's journey resonates with authenticity and raw emotion. Her candid account sheds light on the complexities of mental illness and the toll it can take on even the most accomplished individuals.
April Simpkins' perspective adds another layer of depth to the narrative as she grapples with the unimaginable loss of her daughter. Through her words, readers gain insight into the aftermath of suicide and the challenges of coping with grief and moving forward.
"By the Time You Read This" is more than just a memoir; it is a powerful exploration of mental health, resilience, and the enduring impact of love and loss. It offers solace to those who may be struggling with similar demons and serves as a beacon of hope for those left behind.
Furthermore, the decision to allocate net proceeds from the book to the Cheslie C. Kryst Foundation speaks to Cheslie's enduring legacy and commitment to making a positive impact on the world even in death. This foundation, founded in her honor, will undoubtedly continue her work and serve as a source of support for those battling mental health issues.

It is sad to think she had so much going for her, yet she felt it was better to end her life.

Review of “By the Time You Read This” by Cheslie Kryst
Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2024
“By the Time You Read This” is a poignant and compelling narrative that delves deep into the personal and societal struggles that shaped the life and legacy of Cheslie Kryst, the former Miss USA. The book offers a window into the mind and experiences of Kryst, whose untimely and tragic end casts a shadow over her narrative, yet in many ways, enriches the reader’s understanding of her journey.
Cheslie brilliantly captures the essence of her life, charting her accomplishments and the pervasive feelings of inadequacy that haunt many black women. Her story is told with a raw honesty that makes it immensely relatable and moving. The narrative is not just a recounting of events but a thoughtful exploration of the challenges faced by those who, like Kryst, shine brightly despite the darkness around them.
What makes this book particularly touching is the inclusion of her mother’s perspective. Her reflections on her own mental health struggles and her message of hope provide a powerful conclusion to the story, offering support and encouragement to others facing similar battles.
This book is not just a biography; it’s a heartfelt reminder of the impact one individual can have and the importance of mental health awareness in the African-American community. “By the Time You Read This” is an essential read for anyone looking to understand more deeply the personal battles many face quietly and the strength it takes to confront them publicly. Kryst’s life, as depicted in this book, is a bright light indeed, and her story is one that will resonate with many. I highly recommend this profound and beautifully crafted book.

NOT WHAT I THOUGHT....

I admire her mother for having the strength and the motivation to put this book together.. Not sure if I could of been that strong. The story itself was really good and I read it very quickly... I guess I was thinking I'd get to the part where Cheslie actually TALKED about her depression and what she was going thru and what was ultimately the end for her..because in reading her words - things seemed to be just fine.. until they weren't. I felt as if a very important chapter was left out.. I mean, all in all.. it was a good read and I loved the second part when her mother shared her own walk... but I guess I was just hoping to know more.. and I really don't.

Thank you so much to Cheslie’s mom April for honoring Cheslie’s wish to publish her book.
I could hear Cheslie’s voice as I read and found myself laughing imagining her bubbly self writing it.
Cheslie’s incredible tenacity along with her warmth, laughter, authenticity & beauty (in & out) has been incredible to watch over the years.
I relate so much to struggling with the internal awful darkness while being known “as the bubbly/positive light” & am grateful for the opportunity to have learned more about Cheslie.
To her mom and family, you are so brave & I hope you find joy in all things in a way that you never imagine!
