About this item

A guide for parents to help children of all ages process the onslaught of unfiltered information in the digital age.

Education is not solely about acquiring information and skills across subject areas, but also about understanding how and why we believe what we do. At a time when online media has created a virtual firehose of information and opinions, parents and teachers worry how students will interpret what they read and see. Amid the noise, it has become increasingly important to examine different perspectives with both curiosity and discernment. But how do parents teach these skills to their children?

Drawing on more than 20 years’ experience homeschooling and developing curricula, Julie Bogart offers practical tools to help children at every stage of development to grow in their ability to explore the world around them, examine how their loyalties and biases affect their beliefs, and generate fresh insight rather than simply recycling what they’ve been taught. Full of accessible stories and activities for children of all ages, Raising Critical Thinkers helps parents to nurture passionate learners with thoughtful minds and empathetic hearts.

This audiobook includes a downloadable PDF that contains exercises from the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary!

I'm right and you're wrong! No, you're wrong and I'm right! In today's world how did we as a collective whole come to such a deductive simplistic and defensive way of communicating with each other in person, online? How? Why do we feel the need to defend then prove to another with our own litany of data and facts to prove the other is wrong and we are right? Are they wrong? Are we right? How does this all play out in our roles as leaders, teachers, parents and role models to our children? What does traditional school practices have to do with any of this? Raising Critical Thinkers by Julie Bogart takes a deep dive into such poignant questions. Julie is well known in the homeschooling world but her latest work tackles grander issues that affect each and every person today especially our children. She has crafted a brilliant piece of work sharing her knowledge and experience with factual research and data. She didn't write this book to write just another book. She wrote this book out of passion for teaching, learning, parenting, the direction our society is taking and the profound affects our misguided critical thinking skills have in today's world. Tangible tools and activities are outlined at the end of each chapter broken into age brackets that provide concrete ways to begin critical thinking exercises with our children. Activities are fun and engaging as well as thought-provoking. As an adult, you may surprised by your own thought processes.

Sure we all have thousands of books we can choose to read filled with suggestive tools to help us be better parents, teachers, role models, homeschoolers but this book is different. It's different because this book is written with a greater overarching perspective. Julie's writing doesn't pigeonhole one topic to the next but weaves the concept of raising critical thinkers throughout. You don't have to be just a parent or just a teacher or just a homeschooler or just someone who works with children to benefit from reading Julie Bogart's book. This book is really written with everyone in mind in the hopes that by gaining an understanding of our own critical thinking practices, unraveling and learning new ways, we can then engage our children in a way that they adopt healthy critical thinking skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and thoughtful

I listened to the audio of this book before purchasing the paperback. It's such a good read, not only for parents, but for educators too! It's especially poingnant in today's climate of misinformation. We all can fall for social media posts or news articles that look real, but have no basis to them. Julie does a fantastic job of laying out how to think critically as well as how to help our kids think critically too!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected page-turner and must read for all!

If you aren't familiar with Julie Bogart's writing, know that it is a breath of fresh air. It is full of warmth, understanding and insights that you didn't even know you needed. When I first stumbled upon Julie, I was an overwhelmed mom unexpectedly homeschooling my boys. Her wise words still ring in my ear daily, almost 8 years later.

But, while Julie is huge is the homeschooling world, that's certainly not all she's about. In RAISING CRITICAL THINKERS, Julie is getting us all to think, and think well. You do not have to be a homeschooler, a parent, or even a grandparent to benefit. You simply need to be a thinker, and isn't that what we should all strive to be? Not just taking and believing things we see at face-value, but looking at them with a critical thinking mindset, and then forming our own opinions.

Looking at the title, you may know this is a book you want to read, but perhaps wouldn't consider it a "page-turner." Well, that's where Julie shines and shows us she knows what's up. She's raised 5 kids - she knows what we're dealing with, how busy our days are, and how much information is being thrown at us and our kids daily.

Throughout the book, she freely shares some of her experiences with us. It makes us want to keep reading because we feel like we have a friend in the pages and want to know more about them. It is in no way a boring, non-fiction read. Instead, RAISING CRITICAL THINKERS is a wonderful tool that will not collect dust, but will be referenced often as we strive to improve ourselves, our families, and our communities. Thank you, Julie, for your insights once again. You are a gift.

This is a book that I can see visiting again and again - we have used a few of the practices and they provoke thoughtful conversations - I like that the exercises are age based so I can revisit it with my kids at different ages. It is easy to read and helpful.
