This book is amazing and hands down the best purchase I've made as a DM. My players can be minmaxers and power gamers. This guide helps even the playing field and makes fights more interesting. This book is a sequel that covers monsters from outside of the Monster Manual. If you have the extra cash, I'd definitely recommend buying both this book and the original. Plus, if you're on the fence, you can get a taste of the books at the authors blog; many of the monster tactics found in this book and the original can be found there for free!

A quick search of YouTube for this author talking about this book series will tell you whether this book is for you or not. In a nutshell, the author examines the stats and abilities of D&D monsters, and provides a fun, logical way to run these monsters, providing the how and why. Really brings these to life in play, and adds so much enjoyment to combats. I can see if someone doesn't like game mechanics, this would not be up their alley. I love it!

Covering Volo's Guide and Modenkainen's Tome, this gives a good look at the capabilities and tactics of the monsters, creatures, and NPCs with in depth analysis of the lore (when provided by WOTC) and the motivations of each. My combats have been much more balanced and meaningful to the players with the tactics outlined in this book as well as the first book, "The Monsters Know What They Are Doing."

These books are a must have for the DM who is looking to up their game and create more interesting and challenging encounters.

What order are they in?!

As with the first book, this is an excellent must-have for Dungeon Masters to play their creatures in a smarter, more challenging, and more interesting way.

I just have one complaint: Why is the order of the entries 100% random? The creature types (humanoid, ooze, fiend, etc.) are in a completely random order, and then the creatures within those sections are completely random as well! Would it have been that hard to order them in alphabetical order so you don't have to consult the table of contents every single time you need to look up a creature? I guess I can resort to using the index every time, but It's really frustrating that this wasn't just done on the table of contents and the order of the pages themselves.
