What a fun read! Not that it's a surprise with this author.
Was it insta love? Yep. Perfect in all the ways? No, but my god it was entertaining. It was a mix of cuddly men, funny interactions and one liner, great side characters, some steam and the perfect amount of action. An all around candy book I couldn't put down.

I have read this book in both Digital and Audiobook forms and both options were highly entertaining. The three characters in this book are so distint and full of their own personalities that when they come together each of them shine in their own right.
Bel has insecurities and a big sense of responsibility, Nico has massive energy and enthusiasm, and Garen has a huge protective streak and patience. These all work together to create a cohesive team for their job and a cohesive partnership within ther personal lives and budding relationship. When they all come together is is amazing in it's intensity and quite lovely and steamy.
Like a lot of this authors books there are a lot of action and humor and energy involved so that the lower steam elements aren't completly noticible, plus the tension between the characters keeps things interesting.
For the Audiobook version:
I often find that audiobooks can push certain things about books forward when compared to reading the digital or physical versions. For some reason the pacing and vocal inflections can bring a character to life and bring different feelings into other parts of books. Also, the humor strikes me as so much funnier. The Three narrators for this books were great. They brought the characters to life and helped me understand who they are on a different level. The only thing I struggled with is that one of the narrators didn't seem to have the right sound for a character which threw me a bit because he did a great job.

Love the humor

Really great start to a new series. I love the humor used. Very interested in knowing a little more about the world these characters live in since magic is a known thing. We also need more info about Garen. Also, I want to know more about Mobius, probably the most unique familiar ever. Basically I just want more!
One of the things that did bother me was a scenario would be set up and then it wouldn't play out on the page. Example: Wards were set up to keep people away from the area they were clearing of bad magic because this was not a single day project. Everyone is exhausted at the end of a long day and they get called in to unstick a couple of people who ignored the keep out signs and got stuck in the ward. Now this would normally be simple to take down the ward, get the people, and put the ward back up. But, when they get there, Bel realizes they forgot to scrub the residual magic and the wards have sucked all of this magic residue up and twisted it into something insane, the magic has kind of melded the ward into the rock. They aren't sure how to get this undone, but they know if they get done before midnight they will be lucky. End of chapter. Next chapter starts with them waking up the next morning, and all that is said is 1 sentence about they got the people out and Matt and Victoria didn't get the calls, due to not checking there phones. First, you set me up for this whole situation, then leave me hanging. Second, 2 government agents in the middle of a dangerous job just leave 1 phone charging and the other on vibrate and neither check the phones at all from about 5pm till the next morning? and the other agents don't go track them down when they don't respond to calls about people being stuck in the wards? Makes no sense. Also this isn't the only time a scene was set up, then left off page.
I like this author a lot. (although I really need more Jon books, I feel his and Brandon's relationship has really evolved to a great place after Vegas and I so need the next adventure where they are a solid couple to really round out the series) I really love the adventure, the humor, and the unique take on the different worlds in AJ Sherwoods different series. I haven't had many issues with editing which is a bonus in this genre.
I fully recommend anything by this author, even the first book in Jon's mysteries which had some personal issues that the author fixed in the next books.

Such a fun read!!

This book was pure unadulterated fun. From sweet Bel to Nico (aka the Energizer Bunny) to protective Garen, I love them all. I loved how Garen and Nico complimented each other in protecting Bel. I was really struggling for a lot of the book with Garen being the odd man out. I wanted him to be just as important to Bel as Nico was.
I also really loved how their relationship evolved throughout the book. There was attraction and the familiar bond (with Nico) but the relationship built slowly. I liked that Nico was at odds between his attraction to Bel and his feelings for Garen. I was completely invested in them and couldn't wait for the big payoff. (It was totally worth it!)
Loved the magical aspects of the book and was enamored by the eccentric side characters. Yes, I'm talking about you Wicky. Grandpa Bel too! And I really wouldn't mind having a hellhound of my own!

Very fun

This author is almost always auto buy for me. All of her books are fun and totally engrossing. I usually like shorter books but with this book, even at 386 pages, I did not hesitate because I knew I would love every page and I absolutely did. Bel is such a great character, trying to do his best as a young mage and then being rejected by his first familiar. The author made me feel so much for what he went through. Nico and Garen, both, were perfect partners for Bel and Nico was such a kick and golden retriever was a spot on description of him. Garen made the perfect stabilizing influence for Bel and Nico. All of the secondary characters were also well done and the different cases the three men took on were exciting. I also enjoyed all of the pop culture references to Star Wars and The Princess Bride, fun, fun. All in all, another outstandingly great start to a new series by this author.
