5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't disappoint

I had been reading a string of duds. It's disappointing when you spend money and time on sub par books. Then I ordered this book. All I can say is you will enjoy it. With a crime podcast being central to the book I at first thought I'd already read this one. But, no. This was another using that format. Everything is revealed at a perfect pace. Good mystery. A little romance. Interesting characters. Definitely in top 3 I've read this year and I read a lot.

Listen for the Lie

4/5 ⭐️

Lucy Chase may have forgotten Plumpton but Plumpton has not forgotten her. It is hard to ignore the girl who supposedly murdered her best friend but does not remember anything. Savvy Harper was the town’s sweetheart and a charmer, especially with the men. Lucy and Savvy were inseparable so everyone was shocked when Lucy was found roaming the streets covered in Savvy’s blood. Five years have passed since that horrible night and Lucy has moved on to start fresh in LA.

When a family event brings Lucy home, she is forced to face the past. Not only does she have to answer to the town, but Ben Owens, a famous true-crime podcaster shows up and has questions for Lucy. Lucy has never spoken to anyone or given an interview until now. She decides to help Ben with his podcast “Listen for the Lie” and solve Savvy’s murder once and for all. Even if this means she could be the one who did it.

Listen for the Lie was a fast-paced, twisty mystery that I could not put down. The writing format alternated among real-time, flashbacks and Ben’s podcasts. The best part of this compelling thriller was its dark humor. Also, Lucy is a phenomenal character with her sass and sense of humor. She is a hot mess but her quick wit and sarcasm make her very likable. I have a few complaints about this book. The first one is the amnesia trope is overdone! And the second one is Lucy’s family is appalling; everyone except her grandmother. Lastly, I have so many questions about the ending. Lucy makes a very vague statement that leaves me bewildered. I like mysteries wrapped up neatly with a bow.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This is very well done! The writing alternates between real-time, flashbacks, and Ben’s podcast. It kept me engaged and I couldn’t put it down! It has dark humor, expertly dangled carrots, and solid twists. I found the protagonist, Lucy, unlikable at first (I changed my mind on page 144); I think that’s the mark of an excellent writer. Thrillers can be hit or miss but I throughly enjoyed this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Audio Great Story
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2024
I absolutely loved the audio recording of this book. The woman portraying Lucy brought her personality to life. She understood this character and through voice made us understand her strengths and vulnerabilities. The other voices were also believable. It seemed there were many different people as characters. The story was unique and compelling. I loved Savvy even though she was only in Lucy’s head. The author created characters to love and hate. Everyone had a distrusting side, a contradiction to the truth, which fed the twists and turns.
I thoroughly enjoyed this creative story and so much more because of the audio recording.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good choice!

Enjoyable, well written, believable dialogue. The mystery captivated me to a certain point. I wasn't on the edge of my seat most of the time, but that was ok.
I really liked the audiobook - both the narrator and the format (switching between book chapters and podcast episodes). One review I read mentioned that the reviewer found the intro/outro music to the podcasts irksome, it was the opposite for me. Felt like a real podcast. (It was no Serial, but what is? ????)
Overall happy I used my Audible credit on this ????????

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun read then it turns serious
Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024
Lucy was cynical, a master of sarcasm and wit thru the first 60% or so of the book. Then Tintera turns serious about leading us to finding out who killed Savvy. I couldn't make a good guess about who the killer was until Tintera led me to that person. Excellent storytelling.

4 stars for Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera

Lucy left her Texas hometown five years ago after becoming a suspect in the murder of her best friend, Savvy. Though there wasn’t enough evidence to arrest her at the time, the townspeople made it clear they believed she was guilty. Worse, Lucy couldn’t insist they were wrong, because she suffered a head injury that fateful night and couldn’t remember what happened!

When her beloved, and quite outrageous, Grandmother convinces Lucy to return for a short visit to celebrate her 80th birthday, Lucy finds herself involved in a true crime podcast about the murder. It turns out that the people of Plumpton have secrets on top of secrets, and handsome podcaster, Ben, is determined to discover the truth, with or without Lucy’s help.

Listen for the Lie is fast-paced and full of twists and big reveals, a novel that kept me awake far past my bedtime on several occasions. The chapters alternate between Lucy’s perspective and entertaining bombshells from the podcast episodes, interspersed with Lucy’s memories from the past. If you like thrillers with some humor that are more intriguing than dark, give this one a try.
