Lucas isn’t the usual central character in this effort. That’s because it’s not his usual kind fo case.
Dr. Scott an expert on infectious diseases has determined that the Earth is in danger of extinction because of global warming caused by the billions of human beings. The only way to save it is to exterminate five billion of them.
Dr. Scott has come up with a toxin that will do it by marrying the deadly Marburg virus with Measles. Measles is much more contagious and would spread rapidly.
When Scott disappears, Letty, Lucas’s daughter, is given the task of finding him. She calls in Lucas to help and he connects with others in the law enforcement community. There’s even a British agent, Hawkins, who develops a romantic relationship with Letty. All these people are chasing Dr. Scott and his helpers, and it’s hard to develop individual characters. We’re used to smart aleck Lucas and Virgil Flowers playing off of each other. That’s not happening here. There’s nothing funny about this situation.
And so the story develops into a chase situation. They need to catch Scott and his followers before they can spread the virus in an airport or someplace with a lot of people who will get on a plane and spread it even further. They know it’s real. They’ve found people Scott had already infected as test vehicles and experts have determined that it’ll do what Scott had wanted.
Along the way one of Scott’s followers has infected a church full of people. They’re surrounded but they want to get out anyway. Some of the main characters, who’ve had physical confrontations with Scott, are also infected.
This book will keep you on the edge of your chair, and it’s not exactly over at the end.
