5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn’t put it down

One of my chief complaints in romance novels is when the characters don’t communicate with each other. The warning at the beginning of this book said that they suck at communication. That made me laugh because it meant I knew what to expect going in and therefore couldn’t complain in the review. *still smiling about it even now*

So, setting aside poor communication - which honestly came across as believable rather than contrived for story drama - I liked both characters and enjoyed the plot arc. The side characters were interesting and I’m intrigued by the king. Something is going on there. I have theories, which I won’t discuss here, but I’m anxious to see the story continue to unfold.

Unfortunately, I have things to do tomorrow, otherwise I’d just binge the whole trilogy right now. …..I really do have things to do tomorrow. ….Things I didn’t do today because I was reading this book…..So I honestly do NOT have time to keep reading- I’m not convincing anyone, am I?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great storytelling

It's a great story, and didn't seem like it was written by people who don't know any men who love men. Well done. That said, there were still so many things they didn't speak about by the end and it killed me a little. Lol

The characters are who they are without my preconceived notions. They all had their own developmental histories. Frankly, I was able to appreciate the authors ability to involve the reader in bringing everything to a final culmination. It was an enjoyable read capturing my attention.

To say I was engrossed in this book would be an understatement! It was truly a great read with high elements of royal and high fantasy I was wanting and I got it ! Between the chemistry of the characters and the adorable soul bound creatures, this book is a must read for anyone wanting a good M/M fantasy read!

I’m really not one for big age gaps, but these two made it work. I’m very excited for the rest of this series

3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it... but the ML was seriously unlikeable

I really wanted to love this story. I actually like arranged marriage stories (though I know it can be an unpopular trope), and thought that the fantasy elements of this book seemed really cool. Now I liked how the author seemed to take bits and pieces of inspiration from other fantasy series (bit of House of Dragons, bit of His Dark Materials, etc.) and make those elements their own.

As for the characters, I adored Genya and I pretty much hated Mikhail. Genya is very young (19), very inexperienced, but adept at courtly matters because that's what he grew up learning. Mikhail is 30, and one giant man baby. So many of Genya's blunders or missteps in the relationship can be attributed to his young age, and his abusive father and brother. Yet every single time he doesn't react to something in the EXACT way Mikhail wants him to, Mikhail will storm off and pout while leaving Genya to spiral and try to figure out how to appease him. And when I say Mikhail expects Genya to react exactly how he wants, I'm not joking. At various points in this novel it's up to sweet Genya to try and navigate his husband's horrible temperament while getting almost no understanding from anyone else. There are times where Mikhail is the one to reach out to Genya, and he'll mentally resolve himself to do better, and then he gets mad at Genya once more for something minor and he goes back to avoidance and passive aggressiveness. Despite Genya only being 19, he's far more mature than his much older husband, and he's having to take on most the emotional labor in the relationship. Mikhail never seems to have empathy for the fact that he literally married a teenager who is being manipulated by his family, even though he KNOWS Genya is being manipulated and he still doesn't care to try and speak with him or understand him!

And then, when the pair finally seems to reach some sort of understanding, the book ends, which is a huge pet peeve of mine. I hate when books have all this tension and build up to the characters finally resolving their differences and truly becoming a couple, and then we don't get to see any of that healthy relationship because the book ends. Overall, this book got 3 stars because it had a really cool concept and I loved Genya, but Mikhail's immaturity and poor treatment of Genya just ruined it for me.

Can’t wait for the next one in this series. It did have quite a few misunderstandings, which usually drive me crazy, but it made sense as this is book one of a longer series.

4.0 out of 5 stars King Killer

I just finished reading this book and I enjoyed it. For me, it is a 4/5. The main characters are Misha, a dragon bonded prince, and Genya,a mink bonded lesser noble. Misha’s family thinks he needs to get married and Genya’s father offers up his youngest son. Misha, also a great warrior, has a reputation around court for being hard to get to know and uncaring. He really loathes court. Genya on the other hand excels at court. This is not the ideal marriage for either man. Genya is tasked by his devious father to spy on Misha and Misha does not want to love. But there are also other intrigues happening. Someone wants to kill the king and put Misha in his place. Misha and Genya have a lot to sort through if they want to make it through this intrigue together or even alive.
