About this item

As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters.

Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it, leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.

Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grass portrays the great killers of the African bush, not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog.

Listeners can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.

I was looking for a good real life adventure book. This is it!! The author, Peter Hathaway Capstick is incredibly experienced with first-hand hunting of the most dangerous animals in Africa. He provides the reader with pertinent and interesting details to keep you wanting more. But,even as he describes stories of man-eating lions, leopards and crocs, he reminds us that as horrible as death is, it is a part of daily existence in Africa. A GREAT READ!

This isn’t one of those dry and self-aggrandizing works! The stories are interesting, humorous and witty, as well as terrifying and sad!
I had the honor of meeting the author and talking with him for hours about his life and work; he told the stories like I would have had they happened to me. Because of that, I could really connect to the story and feel of the event as it unfolds!
Have a drink handy, because you’ll feel the dry dust in your throat and the blazing sun on your head, as you cautiously look for the client’s gut shot lion…in the Long Grass.

If you like hunting stories this book will be one of the best you have ever read. No kidding. Excellent stories! One minute you're on the edge of your seat...the next minute your laughing at his dry humor. Buy all of his book you can. You won't be disappointed.

A interesting book about the unexpected twists, and turns of hunting in Africa. Many animals that I had to previous impressions of, were described much differently than I would’ve expected. Great writing style. Hard to put the book down.

I don't really remember when I began being interested in big game hunters and the "big five". But I find Peter Hathaway Capstick fascinating. He comes across as a rather bad boy of the English gentry. His wit, metaphors, descriptions all resonate--British. But he is an American who attended the University of Virginia! He seems to love big, powerful guns/rifles/shotguns, but a close second favorite of his is a round (or three) of "sundowners", hefty glasses of scotch/whiskey/good, really good wine. But he'll settle for a cold beer as long as he has his smokes. I used to watch nature shows and cringe when the lion caught the little antelope. Now I observe predatory animals doing what nature intended for them to do. After all, fried chicken anyone?

I have now read all of Capstick's books and enjoyed every one. I particularly respect the way he describes the African people and their different cultures. His trusty gunbearer, Silent, and scout, Invisible, are held in manly affection. Perhaps Capstick's books appeal to me because they represent a type of man and lifestyle which has sustained the human race since the birth of man and seems too often now to becoming men with tidy fingernails, soft hands, and fluorescent tans encased in suits and ties. Well yes, someone has to be a lawyer, but give me the rough-around-the-edges guy any time. Capstick's books allow this armchair traveler to experience the thrill of the safari without the $75,000 fee.

I read this entire book in less than 3 days. It was one of the most captivating pieces of work imaginable.
It depicts real life adventures that are classic and appealing with detail that makes a reader feel they are actually on safari. This book, in my opinion deserves a 10+.
