5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read!!!!

Loved this book! It is light, funny, and humanizes the now famous comic. I thought it was an honest glimpse into survival, following your dreams, and the hilarity that life always throws at us. Dulce is not only talented on screen but also with a pen. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a laugh and inspiration.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh, funny voice — I bet audiobook is even better

I didn’t know Dulce Sloan before I received this arc, but now I want to consume all the archive content of hers I can find! She has a fresh voice and rhythmic way of telling stories — even thought this wasn’t audio, I could practically hear her reading it to me.

She kept saying “I’m not writing a memoir,” which is a strange thing to say in a memoir? But really, I think she means that she shares her lived experiences alongside smart, strong, CLEAR calls to action we should all take to create a better society. Never preachy, but direct and honest. Highly recommend seeking out her recent interviews promoting the book if you want a sneak peek.

One example: her thought on “the greatest moment in white American history is when they started allowing dogs in office buildings.” I laughed so hard, then got irritated because I am DOG PERSON HEAR ME ROAR, she continues for a few pages on her rant then —BAM. I understand why she dislikes dogs.

I wish I’d received an audio version, but alas I did not. Some parts in written form felt like they dragged on a too long. I don’t wanna read about office jobs for three chapters. But I bet her live impersonation of coworkers and characters would’ve made it better.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the early copy!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Tour of Dulce’s Love Life

I like Dulce but I didn’t like the book. Don’t care who she was or wasn’t hooking up with and there has to be more to her formative development than just the sex. I wanted more scoop on The Daily Show and her relationships with the other comedians ~ not just a romp through her bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious way to end a week

I work at a call center and often listen to books or watch TV to pass the time on slow days. Dulce was the perfect edition to an SUPER slow Friday and I loved hearing about her life so far in her own words. Hilariously funny and engaging from beginning to end. I can't say if reading the novel would be the same based on how it is written. This book was meant for audio as part of the charm is that it feels like a long phone conversation with a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny memoir

Dulce Sloan has had a really interesting journey to find success in comedy. With the never-ending support form her mother, Dulce worked hard to earn her success. As a child, Dulce moved around a lot and that experience helped her develop a low tolerance for other's nonsense, but it also gave her a lot of perspective (and material) to fuel her comedy. She worked all sorts of jobs and continued to have experiences that helped to make her a powerful force on stage. She has a wonderful conversational style to her essays and will absolutely read anything she ever decides to write.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved this Memoir!

I picked this book based solely on the cover, and I was NOT disappointed! Dulce is now my best friend in my head. The title is sooo fitting! I was unfamiliar with this comedian when I started this book, but I’m a huge fan now. This book was funny, raw, and full of joy. I found myself smiling and laughing throughout the majority of this book.

This story was very well written and just an overall fun ride. I enjoyed getting to know Dulce through the stories of her life. I felt that she was very vulnerable and dove deeper than most surface level memoirs. The tone was just like having a conversation with a close girlfriend. She did a phenomenal job narrating the audiobook!

I'm glad I was reminded about her book on a podcast. Read this book quickly, and even though it wasn't an audio book, the authors voice really comes through! I hope you read more of her writing in the future. Enjoyable :)
