Nobody is ever really good enough for her son, but Louise was perfect! Until she became ill and passed away, leaving Ben to raise his two boys alone. But, that's okay. Mom will do anything she needs to in order to help Ben raise them. But she enjoys taking care of them: doing their laundry, cleaning the house, cooking for them and picking her grandson's up from school, caring for them until Ben gets home from work. Sure, it's a lot, on top of taking care of her own husband and home, but she enjoys it, and it give her a sense of purpose, along with her part time job at a doctor's office.
Two years after Louise's death, Ben meets Amber. Mom noticed very drastic changes are being made to Ben's home that she just doesn't see as being suitable for him or the boys. All of their toys disappear from the living room, risque' pictures are are hung on the walls, and all of the photos of Louise have disappeared.
The boys no longer seem happy — especially Noah, the older boy. She even found one of the pictures of Louise hiding under his pillow in his bed... as if he needed to snatch it and keep it safe.
Amber seems to move into their lives quickly, and as she moves into Ben's life, Mom is quickly pushed out. Suddenly, Mom feels useless. Doesn't know where — or IF — she fits in to her son's and grandsons lives anymore. She's removed as an emergency contact at their school, is told she is no longer needed to do the laundry, then no longer needs to clean the house — and as a final act of what she sees as betrayal — no longer needs to pick the boys up and keep them after school because Amber is moving in!
But, she has suspicions about Amber. There's just something not right about her. Yet nobody will listen to her. On top of all of this, she is trying to help a mysterious young mother who is possibly being abused by someone, and her husband seems to have "meetings" every night of the week. She stopped asking where he's going a long time ago, and thought she didn't really care anymore. But she finds out that the young lady she's trying to help and her husband's life are intertwined in a way she didn't expect and that her feelings for her husband are much different than she thought they were.
THEN... She gets a break and finds out that Amber lied about two very important things. The problem is: she isn't sure Ben will find these lies to be enough to end things with her. So, what CAN she do to protect her family, and especially her grandchildren, from this woman who has what she is she are evil intentions before it's too late and she loses them forever?
This book does not close all of the plot lines, which is why I left it with only four stars. The author really could make a sequel if she wanted to, leaving that plot line open, along with the young mother, if she wanted to. With mom/grandma starting life over and the young lady and her kids coming to live with her.
So I did a binge buddy read with Misty @ Misty’s Book Space. We decided to sit down and read this book all in one day and to do that together! It was really fun to binge read this with a buddy. We definitely motivated each other to keep reading and push through. We didn’t completely read the book in one day, but we did get it mostly read. I only had 60 pages to finish on the second day, so that was really successful! If you want to check out Misty’s thoughts on Liar, please click here.
Now on to my thoughts of Liar. This is KL Slaters third book. I have read and review both of her previous books and I really enjoyed them. I also really really enjoyed this one as well. KL Slater is definitely an author that I need to read every book of hers!
KL Slater has a way of crafting her stories where you can not guess the plot twist! I would have never guessed the big reveal! Even though I did guess the minor reveal that goes along with the major reveal. If that makes any sense at all. LOL
I really enjoyed the story building and getting to know the characters. The main characters in this book were Ben, Judi, and Amber. I really despised Amber, like I have no words. That didnt really change by the end of the book, but I did end up not disliking her as much as I previously did. Judi was the character I sympathize with the most, she goes through A LOT over the course of this book. There’s so much I could say about Judi, but SPOILERS ARE NOT A THING HERE ON MY BLOG so I will leave it at that. Ben was just completely freaking FRUSTRATING with how gullible he was. Like I wanted to just slap him multiple times.
There were, however, a few reasons why I just couldn’t give this book the full 5 stars. The major reason was because I felt like the ending was super rushed. Like I wanted more details and it to be a little more fleshed out. Maybe if the pacing was a little better it would have worked out. Like the beginning was super slow, I just kept thinking like ok…what are you getting at here. There were also a lot of unnecessary information that didnt really play a part to this story, which was kind a bummer because I thought Slater could’ve done more with some of that information or taken it out completely.
That seems to be a common complaint for me. The beginning being a little too slow with unnecessary fluff and the ending being way too rushed for my liking. At least I know I’m consistent on that aspect. Unfortunately, Liar was definitely one of the books that had this happen.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to others that are looking for a psychological thriller. But I would recommend any of KL Slater’s books for that as well!
In other great news, we already know the name and release date of KL Slater’s next book and I CANNOT WAIT to pick this book up! Her 4th book is called THE MISTAKE and the release date is October 4, 2017! As soon as I can preorder a paperback, I will be doing that! I have some good feels about this book already! Isn’t that cover so appealing and gorgeous!
Special thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me the opportunity to read this in exchange for my completely honest review!
The characters drove me nuts. There was no depth to the males in the book; they were pretty much throw away characters. As far as Amber, well yes, she was supposed to be awful, and she was well-written in that regard. Judi’s husband Henry was appalling. I understand Slater wrote him to be blind to what Amber was doing, but he was useless. He was verbally abusive to Judi, always knocking her down, and for some reason, Judi stayed with him. I just didn’t get it.
Even Ben, blind to who Amber is underneath the facade, is rushing through his relationship at breakneck speed. And sure, he’s used to how his mother is. But he hadn’t been with anyone since his long-term wife, so why completely blow off her concerns? Why not take a moment to slow things down? He didn’t think of his children’s wants or needs, and that aspect made him a rubbish parent in my eyes.
I liked the plot. That you really have no say in who your children spend their lives with is probably always in the back of a parent’s mind. As the tagline suggests, this was a thriller and there is a “shocking twist”, and while it was a twist, it definitely wasn’t shocking. The book starts with a murder, which is a fun way to start as you’re about to start the story of how they got to this point. There were some parts I loved and some I didn’t, so I think it will be hit or miss for other readers. Overall, a strong, 3-star read.
