The Mission Walker is a new book coming out soon by Edie Littlefield Sunby. This well-written book is intriguing. The book is a memoir as well as a history of the missions of California. It is a journey of self-awareness and faith.
Edie was diagnosed with cancer and with the help and support of her family and the doctors, she managed to beat it into remission. She had been a walker prior to this and was interested in the history of the mission bells in California. She learned about the mission trail the early missionaries had followed as they set up missions. She walked the eight hundred miles of the Historic California Mission Trail from the California border to Sonoma. Her descriptions of the trails and the missions are breathtaking. The descriptions of her journey through her faith are compelling and interesting to read.
After her journey, the cancer returned. Once more, after her treatments, she decided to walk the remaining eight hundred miles of the El Camino Real. This leads from southern Baja California to the California border. This section of the mission trail is much more severe and much less mapped out. She was required to have vaqueros accompany her on this section of the journey to even find the trail. Each of the vaqueros had his own personality and his own way of doing things which makes the journey even more interesting. The people she meets along the trail are so welcoming to her and do their part to help her along the way.
Edie was given a 0.9 percent chance of survival with a three-month time limit before she began her walks. She survived both walks and is still surviving. As an Oklahoma-bred woman, she has shown the sturdiness and bravery of a woman whose ancestors had survived the Dust Bowl. Edie happens to be a relative of mine through her Littlefield relations. I met her in May 2017 at a family reunion. She is one of the organizers of this reunion which has met yearly for 90 years. I was deeply impressed by her acceptance of the cancer and her need to continue to fight against its reoccurrence The book is totally an embodiment of the author.
I strongly recommend this book. It is a testimony of faith and courage.

I was deeply moved and touched to the core of my soul throughout this well written book: Page 103 where Edie described being touched by the Hand of God was inspiring. I cried on page 109 where the writer lamented over so many precious souls battling adversities beyond my comprehension. Edie's eloquent writing literally transformed me from my present and took me on this journey. I loved the way she put the historical facts regarding each mission and missionary, their courage and strength being a fuel for her own travels. What an interesting way to connect with history while deepening the experience of how a mans journey so long ago, could bring blessings to us today. On page 146 I laughed out loud as Edie described the female donkeys behaviors. On page 161 Edie describes being outside in the bright moon and the stars felt so close that I could reach up and touch them myself and it truly made my heart sing! On page 191 in the mist of the most unimaginable adversity Edie is able to calm herself and this gave me strength and courage: "The spirit can remain strong even when one's heart is broken". I felt adventurous when Edie carried the Linck's map. I was empowered when she would replace the fear of death with peace, how it is within us to get rid of fear. I grew deep desire to be in a deeper relationship with my spouse by the description of her love for her husband. Whenever I feel defeated or challenged and struggle with difficulties, I pick up this book and get energized to battle my day. I put one foot in front of the other.... binding uncertainty and fear and doubt. I learned to live a full and abundant life regardless of the circumstance that may arise! Bravo and Bravo. Inspirational, educational, adventurous, defying... truly a magnificent read!!!

A riveting and inspirational story of determination and grit. Learning more about the history of the kind, education Jesuit friars and the missions of the 1700's in Baja California and California was particularly enlightening and fascinating. What a feat Ms. Sunby Littlefield accomplished in conquering (with only one lung!!) the rugged terrain of Baja! It was truly a life giving, arduous adventure for her to visit each mission on foot in these regions!
