About this item

As heard on NPR's All Things Considered!

Every day, hundreds of adult children become middle-aged orphans when their elderly parents pass away, leaving behind more than just memories.

You’ve heard the horror stories: arguments over stuff, an inheritance lost forever when easily deceived parents are scammed, siblings estranged, an adult heir taken from daily responsibilities for months because of the enormous task of clearing out a childhood home. It doesn’t have to be that way.

The Estate Lady, professional estate liquidator Julie Hall, knows what to do. Whether your parents are still living or you’re caught in the middle of a crisis, Inheriting Clutter: How to Calm the Chaos Your Parents Leave Behind has solutions. Hall provides trustworthy counsel on how to:

  • Divide your parents’ estate with peace of mind.
  • Minimize fighting with siblings during the estate settlement process.
  • Clear out the family home in 30 days or less.
  • Identify potential items of value in the home.
  • Have “that conversation” with your parents.
  • Prepare your own children for the future.

The Estate Lady offers guidance for any executor, heir, or beneficiary, sharing some of her most fascinating stories as well as helpful checklists of the things that need to be done now and at the time of your loss.

Inheriting Clutter gives you practical, effective steps for liquidating and distributing your parents’ assets in a way that both honors them and promotes family harmony for generations to come.

Quizzes, checklists, and resources are available in the audiobook companion PDF download.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

There is a lot of helpful information in this book; however, it was not what I expected. The title indicates it will tell you how to handle the clutter you inherit, instead it is a lot of stories about how to avoid fights and how to handle valuables that are included in an estate. I don’t consider valuables clutter. There was one small section about how to clean out the house. I was hoping for more information like this small section.

I have used this very important book to get my life, my house, and my future in order. We gave a copy to each of our sons. Then we have talked to them individually to help put our plans in place. Thank you Julie Hall for laying out a plan to get our lives in order!

I’m in the process of closing out my parents estate now. This is a great book. So many things I had not thought about, and others that I had not thought about from a proper perspective. Thank you so much for writing it.

How to deal with all Mom's "collections" keeps my sister and me up at night. Here are clear, easy to understand plain English directions on how to handle all this stuff after Mom's passing. She's 91 and has kept up the "stuff comes in the house but it doesn't go out" right up till Covid hit. We figured undoing all this would be our full-time jobs for minimally a year after her passing, but this author assures us it can be done in only a few weeks after some preliminary foot work. There's hope!

Life will catch up on us when a parent or parents die. We as kids or beneficiaries will never be fully prepared. This book will get you close. Practical, common sense with a warm family tone. I highly recommend this to help when least expected.

2.0 out of 5 stars FYI: This book is the same book as The Boomer Burden by Julie Hall

I just bought this book on Kindle and was so excited to read it. I read The Boomer Burden by Julie Hall and really liked it ( would have given it 5 stars!). When i started to read this book i realized that her stories seemed awfully familiar....So i checked the title of the kindle book i bought...it appeared to be a new title , not the one i own... but gee...it has the same stories! Maybe there is some new material inside, but if you have or read the Boomer Burden, realize this is probably the same book!

I really appreciated how thoroughly Julie outlined what needs to be done, both on the side of parents, as well as their offspring. I'm hoping to get our kids to read this!
