About this item

You and your ego: how to develop a healthy sense of self without becoming an egotist - and how to see through that sense of self for the happiness of yourself and others.

How can you build the healthy ego necessary to be effective in life - yet avoid the kind of egotism that makes people dislike you? Don't worry; Dave Richo has the answers. His new book shows you how to navigate the tricky waters between egotism and selflessness in a way that avoids both extremes and makes you much more effective and loving. The key is to acknowledge your ego and to be kind to it, before you ultimately learn to let it go. As with all Dave's books, this one is full of examples from myth and religion, with plenty of exercises and practical advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars another good self help book...

There is clarity, depth, knowledge on this book YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU THINK..gives us a lot of psychological and spiritual practices that leads us to relating with narcissitic and egotists with compassion, sometimes it could be ourselves, and by embracing loving ourselves we can give what we have to others, but first acknowledging what could be abhorring within us, e.g. unhealthy attitudes, we can then turn to reformative actions that would help us help others and make each other acceptable, more beautiful human to one another; kindness results when the "I" becomes WE,...selfishness turns to graciousness ...one passage of the book reads: "Pride leads to destruction and arrogance to downfall" [a biblical passage from Proverbs]. The author is steeped in knowledge from mythical to religion to psychology and everytime I read his books I feel a notch more literate, and i feel growing spiritually and intellectually without having to go back to college, graduate school and more...
I've read many of author's books, e.g: FROM PAST TO PRESENT; CATHOLIC MEANS COSMIC; WHEN MARY BECOMES COSMIC,...and I've always been fascinated by author's easy to understand theology, psychology, poetical wordings, romantic, aesthetic... as if woven together in beautiful tapestry...the latest book has a cover that is so healing to gaze at, the chapters inside so comforting....I gift his books to many people.....YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU THINK like the many books written by this author is deep, dense, yet easy to understand, oftentimes, lyrical...it is not a one seating book to finish...it's one where you come back to, re read and discover fresh insights seeping in for yourself or to discuss with another person...I highly recommend this book...his other books have more attractive cover than this one, but as the saying goes, don't judge the book by its cover...its size fits a lady's purse, great read to pass time when waiting at doctor's office, airports, anywhere one is alone and needs to use time productively other than just checking emails on an iphone...when one sits near me as I wait in a lobby, they get fascinated with the book I am holding, it becomes an appreciated conversation piece...

5.0 out of 5 stars For failed relationships with “big ego” individuals

David Richo has been one of my favorite teachers at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Marin County, CA. I’ve read several of his books; this one was in conjunction with Dr. Richo’s online course, “Love with a Healthy Ego,” offered by the publisher (Shambhala) at their web site.

For those of us scratching our heads over the unexpected ending to a relationship in which we went out of our way to be positive, supportive, and caring, but instead found ourselves feeling betrayed and taken advantage of after the other person left, this is a great resource. It explains the reasons why our childhood shapes our ego and how our ego shapes our adult relationships, especially those of us with “too small” egos who naturally attract those with egos “too big.” The book also includes practices in mindfulness to help tame an unhealthy ego and pave the way for more balanced and mature relationships down the road.

I indeed have been reformed and renewed by Holy One into a "higher religious consciousness" , in Wisdom and Spirit, in Centering Prayer, contemplative reading and journal writing. And now after finishing this book, I sadly smile when I think, "now as a Catholic, as a deacon, where on earth do I find a religion which tolerates mutuality, love and inclusiveness?"

David Richo's work is top of the line, well thought out and personally researched and presented with tons of compassion and acceptance. I've read many of these books of his, all excellent. I've just started this one, but so far it's excellent as well. I'll update with more detail when I'm done.

Dave Richo's books are rich and sumptuous like flourless chocolate cake: I can only read a little bit before I am full and have to process what I've taken in. His prose is beautiful and the content is life-changing. Each book is a journey in consciousness.

I love books like this. He talks about everyday parts of ourselves that are so often overlooked. Like how our ego plays such a role in how we think, act, and react to life. I'm very satisfied. I recommend it. Check it out =)
