I’ve been following the Mary Russell series for many years now. Having read all of the books in the series, I can truthfully say that this is one of my favorites. Not only is it well written and researched, but the story is intriguing. I could hardly wait to read the next chapter and what it would unfold . Thank you again, Laurie King for a wonderful book.

The next in her series on the further adventures of Sherlock Holmes. A delightful discourse on his family's background told in her detailed, but never boring, style. It kept me guessing to the end.

A fantastic summation of the whole series dragging thread after thread from many of the Russell and Holmes series. I will have to go back and read the series again; some references escaped my memory. As all her works this one is great for those who love history with a personal touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem!

I’ve read all of Laurie King’s books and while some are more compelling than others, they are all so well written with wonderful prose, and with deep and intimately developed characters. None of her books can be read quickly without taking the time to reflect on the storyline and the interrelationships of the characters. Some people don’t like this and are subsequently turned off, but taking this time is a must if you are going to thoroughly appreciate how finely the book is written. Laurie’s books are like the “croissants” of literature! This book was no exception and was delightful!

For those that love anything Sherlock Holmes, if you have not read Laurie King’s Bee-Keeper’s Apprentice, do so immediately. Then, dive into “The Lantern’s Dance”.

Although this book can be read on its own, it will be an even richer experience for you if you read all of her other Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes novels first. I was so grateful to have read every single book the author wrote first.

In 30 years, the author has honed her craft and written one delicious book after another. This one is a celebration of the strength of women and the achievements that are made possible by education (both conventional and unconventional) and courage.

There are those women that achieve greatness in a world that men rule. The author strings their lives into a necklace that men unknowingly decorate and complement.

Read this book and enjoy a well researched and crafted tale of multiple threads that will surprise you and partially explain the enigma of the source of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes’ brilliance. I won’t say any more but you NEED to read this book. Read it slowly with a cup of tea and savor all the scents and spices and sights of a world long past. And perhaps end with a nice Indian meal.

Congratulations to Laurie King for a beautiful work and my best wishes to her for a long and fruitful career as a writer. (Live long, and please keep on writing).

I love these books and feel so familiar with Russell and Holmes. This story has more of the detail of exotic places that Laurie R King excels at creating. Her sense of place in time feels real. I always learn something from these books as I devour the stories. I often read it once and reread it soon after to enjoy the smaller details.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Series Entry
Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2024
I have read all the books in this series, over the last 30 years. This one is by far the best of a very great group of stories. As an avid Holmes fan I really enjoyed that we see more of him in this book than in some of the others, and the outcome was just wonderful. But even though Holmes plays more of a role here, the essential nub of this series, the emphasis on how amazing Mary is as a partner, analyst and detective, is on full display. I did think this started a bit slow but I read the last 70% in one sitting, and couldn't wait to get to the end to see whether what I hoped so much would be the case was in fact the denouement, which it was. The last few of these were a little less stellar than her initial works so I am very happy that this book was so great, and can't wait to read the next entry. For anyone who loves this series, or even for anyone who has not yet read this series but loves Holmes, this book is highly, highly recommended.
