I love the points the author makes. I am 20 years in as a Speech Language Pathologist and can firmly attest the importance of building relationships with your students as foundational and the reason for creating creative lessons. No significant learning will take place unless a significant relationship exists. How does it exist? Take the time to make it happen. Read this book!

Dave Burgess' Teach Like a Pirate is a phenomena. I'm on my second read. Dave does workshops, runs Twitter chats, and hangs the Jolly Roger over the sea of creativity. I rarely read books about teaching. Thankfully, Dave admitted "the best books about teaching are rarely in the education section." That was my hook.

Many teachers are pressured by the demands of teaching and feel creativity is something that other people have. Teach Like a Pirate helps teachers realize anyone can be creative--if they tune into the right frequency.

Dave notes that creativity is hard work--when someone says "It's easy for you. You're creative," it dismisses that hard work. Anyone can Teach Like a Pirate. He urges people to "Commit, start working. Then be open."

Some helpful suggestions: Get outside the classroom. Build the relationships. Be unconventional. Address the elephant in the room--that classes sometimes don't serve students, but this one will. Build relationships with and among students. Be creative, have a life, engage in your hobbies. Don't be a perfectionist. Ignore negativity. It all makes you a better teacher.

Dave applies so many of the great creativity ideas to teaching. This is what makes this book special. In this book, I hear the voices of the great motivators, writers, and creative thinkers--tailored to the classroom. Too many "teaching books" lose me at dry abbreviations and pedagogy pontifications. Teach Like a Pirate is none of that--it's "Have fun. Be creative. Inspire." We won't know if we've done well for generations--our students will be force multipliers. That's the way teaching should be.

"Provide an uncommon experience for your students and they will reward you with an uncommon effort and attitude," says Dave Burgess.

If you feel that you are missing the opportunity to be creative, read this book and find others developing their creativity.

If you are already teaching creatively, read this book, and know that you are not alone--join your peers with the Teach Like a Pirate hashtag on Twitter (#TLAP), and fly your own Jolly Roger high.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Spirit" of Piracy . . .

I've read TLAP before, but I decided to grab a digital copy, as well. I've also decided to write a review for TLAP because I've written a few other ones this week and I feel like something more should be said about this book. First, in a SEA of books written for educators, we are often handcuffed by publishing politics and, as a result, voices that shouldn't be silenced . . . authors or innovators of REAL teaching and learning in the field . . . often float away as a wrinkled cadaver whose stories are only able to be locally shared. Globally, they might be silenced. Dave doesn't float away with wrinkled fingertips, though. He is not silenced, either. He reminds me of a teacher I once new and will always remember. See, the thing about this book is that it pumps you up. It does. And, what educator DOESN'T want to feel good about what they do and can do for kids? No one does. "Mediocrity Doesn't Motivate," indeed. This book is for all of those teachers who have short hair, no hair, or long hair and provides an outlet for you to let your hair down. Do it. Go for it. Do something wild for your students. Go crazy! Try something new! How will students remember content, experiences, or their fellow classmates and teachers if we sit idle and turn into "teacher zombies" who might be bored, ourselves? The pirate outfit or the hashtag superhero isn't a gimmick. This book's outreach is insane. It's awesome. That is the spirit of "piracy." That is the spirit that will never be lost with teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved the audio format of this book

I bought this book a while back and had been making my way through it a bit slowly. I had heard of the book many times and I liked what I read, but I’ll admit that I wasn’t rushing to finish it. However, once I learned of the audio version I jumped at the chance to try again. I have a long commute to work and love audio books. I LOVED this format of Teach Like a Pirate, especially with Dave Burgess reading the book. I felt like I was sitting in the audience of a high energy presentation. I highly recommend listening to this book. It made such a difference to me to be able to hear the emphasis, enthusiasm, and excitement infused throughout. When I was reading the text version, I didn’t get the same sense of enthusiasm and energy that came through loud and clear in the audio version. As an elementary teacher, there are some parts that don’t seem to apply, however, there are still many great ideas. I think the biggest take away for me was the inspiration to take a closer look at my practices as a teacher and to begin asking myself some questions that will help me develop more memorable lessons for my students. I feel a renewed energy for teaching. Thank you, Dave Burgess.
