Good book. Lots of good advice and logical reasoning behind using "healthy fats." I have lost 21 pounds so far! I am Type 1 diabetic and my blood sugars have been excellent!

Simple big idea worth exploring
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2016
Smart Fat was my inspiration to start this journey exploring good fat, bad fat. My previous thinking was that ALL fat was BAD and you should avoid it and since I watched my cholesterol fairly carefully everything I consumed was low fat or no fat. Of course that then triggered me consuming lots of carbohydrates - heck why should a potato be bad for you. It all comes down the education and understanding modern thinking in foods and food categories. This book was definitely an aha moment for me on my journey. Since I wasn’t seeking to lose weight but rather find a way to remove sugars and carbs yet feel fulfilled and NOT starving all day. The ideas in this book are so simple to understand and because of that set you in a new way of eating lifestyle.
The big idea here is the 5-5-10 approach (see attached image). That is 5 servings of Good Fat, 5 servings of Protein and 10 servings of Fiber. At first I was mystified what a serving was but the authors give you simple analogies like a pack of cards etc. Secondly I wanted to verify that data and the facts and I Found similar nutritional data on a few government sites so I felt confident the information was accurate.
My third challenge was remembering what I ate and which category - further what was the shortfall and what foods should I look for to get to the targets. I must have tried every app in the market and could not find one - so since I decided to write one myself - you can read about it at goodfatap.com - I think the key take aways are the total lack of fiber in our daily modern diets. You really need to make a huge effort to find fibers; ten servings is a lot and really hard to get to that number. Although the authors say that it's not imperative you get to exactly 10. However the good news is once you start stretching you will feel so much better. You don’t feel hungry. Your weight drops to a new equilibrium, you don't have sugar cravings, you get your energy back.
This is a wonderful book and provides a good education and kick start into a new lifestyle. I am shortly going for my annual physical and hopefully my numbers will be positive.

I love this book and can honestly say that in the few weeks that I have been following the Smart Fat guidelines, it is changing my life in wonderful ways.
I am a woman in my fifties and it has become increasingly difficult to control my weight using what I thought was a healthy (very low fat, low simple sugar but moderate complex carbohydrate) diet. I adopted the Smart Fat way of eating and didn't get on a scale for 3 weeks. It is so liberating and fun to be able to eat healthy fats that I have been avoiding for years, (plus lots of protein, and fiber from fruit, vegetables and beans). It is also liberating to not count calories. I do find that I need to adjust down the portion size a little bit because I am petite. I feel great, do not have to starve myself, feel nourished and satisfied and have lots of energy. When I got back on the scale I had lost a half of a pound, not a lot, but I am happy! I am still marveling that I can eat avocados and olive oil and nuts and chocolate and not gain weight.
Another benefit is that my extreme 'dry eye syndrome' has improved dramatically. Which, after years of coping, feels miraculous.
I highly recommend this book.

Jonny Bowden is the Nutritional Myth Buster. (I think he was the first to write about the Cholesterol Myth - like - over a decade ago). Steven Masley- a 3-time fellow (American Heart Association, American College of Nutrition, American Academy of Family Physicians.) Both are excellent writers that manage the perfect blend of how and why.
Since I made the shift to eating more "SMART" fats and eliminated the bad fats (and sugars) I've personally experienced a dramatic shift in my energy levels, mental clarity, and cravings. To test my progress, I got some Chocolate therapy from my two favorite therapists (Ben and Jerry) and immediately felt and could measure (on the scale) the change in my progress.
Chapter 4 - Unlearn what you know about food - is mandatory reading. For years I blindly followed "The masses" when I should have been following the "Masley" -
I love this format because it's not overwritten, and can be referenced quickly (Like Chapter 3 - what not to eat).
No brainer. Get the book, apply the principles, feel better.

Some are very bad. Dr

Dr. Masley's work for me added real value to the work of Dr Fuhrman, mentioned in my review of two of his books, and Dr. M goes further.
Yes, fats are essential for the brain. As Dr. Amen says, their is so much fat in our brains, and it is so necessary, that being called a fat-head is actually a compliment. And Yes, we can get all the fats we need from the plant based G-BOMBS that Dr. Fuhrman recommends (Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds and the like). We can use animal fats, but be careful, not all animal fats are equal. Some are very bad.
Dr. Masley, as a Cardiologist, recommends three tests that are essential to helping us understand how we are doing and if we need to take serious interventions to prevent a heart attack or other lifestyle disease. You need to consider getting these tests or using the substitutes Dr. Masley provides that we can use that he has shown via his research can validly guide us. I consider Dr. Masley's research on this a breakthrough.
