5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise - Very Slow Burn, Mystery, Empaths and Promising More in Book 2!

This is a wonderful read. I enjoyed how the story gave the two main characters, Reece and the "Dead Man", time and experiences, good and bad, to get to know each other in a much more in-depth way. Very SLOW burn and can't wait for Book 2 in December already pre-ordered it. That is how much I want to see what happens next with the characters. Of course, Dead Man (Grayson) clearly got to know a lot more about Reece. So Book 2 will probably include some additional info for Reece - all about the Dead Man. I enjoyed the plot as well - the idea that empaths are useful, but also feared by some. It reflects how people really are - some are more open to differences, change, new ways of beings; others not so much. And the murder mystery component is always a plus for me! In terms of critique, I think the only thing I would mention is that there are a few small editing errors scattered throughout, but nothing that spoiled the story at all, or made this less than a 5 for me. Just know that while this is M/M, it is not really about spice, although Reece mental imaginings start to get a little spicier as the story progresses. It is very much relationship-building, mystery, magical empaths, and acceptance. I obviously loved this one! Hope you do too!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Liar City is my favorite read of the year so far. It’s the book I didn’t know I needed to read, and I am thanking all the stars I did! What did I love so much about it: the characters, the fantastic world building, the engrossing mystery, the chilling machinations, and the slow burn romance.

“Do you practice being an enigma? Look at me, the mysterious Dead Man; I speak in riddles and have weird elevator manners, fear me, empaths?”
“Do you practice your sarcasm, making sure no one can take you anywhere unless they enjoy inappropriate sound bites?”

I’m still chuckling over the zings between Reece and Grayson aka The Dead Man. Reece is disarmingly and forthrightly honest. He’s also great at sticking his foot in his mouth, or both feet, and I loved every moment. The best way I can think to describe him is if a cinnamon roll, marshmallow, and jalapeño had a child, that would be him, gooey and sweet with a bite. Oh and Grayson, gah, my heart, it’s all his, no take-backs. Complicated doesn’t even begin to describe him and I. AM. IN. LOVE. He’s drenched in mystery, has an amazing dry delivery and sense of humor, and I know we’ve only skimmed the surface of who he really is. I’m hoping later books will be in his viewpoint because I’d love to peek more in his head.

And this world: empaths and humans divided, the truths and shadows that surround them all, a thrilling mystery (read it to find out as I’m not telling *zip*), and the layers that when revealed only make me hungrier for more. Yes, and more, more, more! Excellent writing, clever dialogue, politically clever, plus who doesn’t love zombie humor, this book will have you invested from the beginning. It’ll keep you reading into the wee hours, and it’ll leave you with the hangover to rule all book hangovers. I’m still replaying moments and scenes as I’m dragging myself through the day, and I don’t (and won’t) regret a single part of my decision as I couldn’t put this incredible book down.

What a page turner! I would like the whole series now please? I know that’s not possible but this series will be on my list right below my LKH series.

There are no words for how much I loved Liar City, and how pained I am now having to wait for the sequel.

I was a big fan of Allie Therin's previous books, but was hesitant to read this because of some reviews that complained about multiple 3rd-party POVs, not being able to keep track of characters, and no romance in Book #1. I'm SO GLAD that I jumped in anyway, and wanted to write this review to make sure that nobody else was scared away from this amazing/heavy/surprisingly fun & funny/intriguing book. To that aim:

-- Multiple POVs can sometimes be a problem when they take away from our protagonists and storyline. But, here, Reece's POV and his adventure with Evan were clearly front and center. The other POVs were seamless and only ever in service to the one central plot: They never drew us away to extraneous matters, but instead gave us important insight on the key events and people. Plus, the mystery/thriller itself is so interesting that I never felt upset to be pulled away from the romance. (Even though I loved the romance SO much.).

-- I have no idea how anybody can find the characters too hard to track or get confused about whose head we're in. My suspicion is that these readers were distracted when they were reading or skimming over the details.

-- Finally, finally: If you don't like a slow burn, it's true that this may not be for you. But this is absolutely NOT one of the books where you barely have a sense of connection between the characters. No, the MCs don't so much as kiss in this book, but they spend almost the whole book together being drawn closer and building a palpable connection. If you like slow burn romances (my absolute favorite), you will love the extended foreplay here.

I am going to immediately turn around and buy the audio with Joel Leslie so that I can enjoy this again and again while I wash dishes and do laundry. :)
