About this item

**THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER**

A Scotsman’s guide to the extraordinary tapestry of the land, history, folklore and stories of his homeland.

From the majestic beauty of the wild Scottish landscape to the hidden traces of its history waiting to be uncovered in every town and village, Andrew McAlindon is enthralled by the country he is lucky enough to call home. As one of Scotland’s busiest tour guides in real life and online, Andy travels around the country to ancient sites such as castles, cemeteries, burial chambers and prisons, celebrating the history, folklore, superstitions and the fascinating people that make Scotland so unique.

Lochs and Legends is Andy’s love letter to Scotland, a love that began when he landed a part on the worldwide phenomenon Outlander, and led to him dedicating his life to learning more about the true star of the show – Scotland. A social media sensation as Andy the Highlander, his first book opens up Scotland’s secrets to anyone, even if they can only explore it from the comfort of their armchair. It invites you to time travel with Andy, walking in the footsteps of kings and queens, lairds and ladies, murderers, farmers, poets, invading armies, and everyday folks like himself. It is Scotland as you’ve never seen it before.

I followed Andy for years and I’ve also taken a tour with him, and this book takes me back to my times visiting Scotland. Andy is a wealth of Scottish knowledge and I love the way he has told the stories in this book. In addition to stories you can also use this as a travel guide to find places you’re interested in seeing on your next trip to Scotland . He also includes tips and resources for traveling around Scotland , as well as recipes from some of his favorite places. (The Red Lion Inn has the best steak pie I’ve ever had. ) I also appreciated the cemeteries and gravestone explanations. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the writing style. Great for a cozy evening read as you imagine the lore and beauty of Scotland.

Kelly and I started following Andy The Highlander (Andy McAllindon) on Instagram before our trip to Scotland last year. His videos got us very excited about our visit and the countryside lived up to the promise. So with another vacation to Scotland coming up (yeah, we loved it that much!), it was perfect timing for him to release this book. I read it and loved it!

McAllindon's passion for his homeland is evident on every page as he shares wild stories about the rich Scottish history and offers plenty of places to discover. We already had a pretty packed itinerary for our trip next month but this book made it even more ambitious as I added a few sites that I have to see now.

Fans of the show Outander will love this book. As will anyone who's been to Scotland or plans to go. And if you're just thinking about it making that trek, this book will convince you to go!

Lochs & Legends is a beautiful, rich and bold story told through the eyes of a beloved Scotsman. A detailed account of history, folklore, legends, mystic's, kings, queen, lairds, lad's ,and lass's woven into the beautiful landscape of Scotland. The reader is taken on a vivid journey through some of the most iconic scenery along with heartfelt sentiment of Andy's love for his country.

I smiled, laughed, and marveled through the whole book it leaves the reader with a keen sense and desire to travel to this marvelous country and experience it through one's own eyes. Having said that once I finished the book I called my travel agent and off to Scotland I will go!

Lochs and Legends written by Andy the Highlander and Lilly Hurd is truly an amazing read! And if you're listening to the audio book, you'll be in for a treat as it's read by Andy himself! This book is all you need to enjoy a most amazing journey around Scotland. It's well organized as each chapter is based on a region of the country which can assist you when planning where to visit. But rather than simply telling you about the region itself you'll get to enjoy the legends and important historical significance of that region. We all love Scotland's amazing scenery and charm - yet to know about some of its interesting past (and not just kings and queens - but all sorts of interesting tales!) help you to soak in the details which then makes it easier to remember.
