About this item

Thriving stand-up comic and actress Yvonne Orji - best known as Issa Rae's BFF on the HBO series, Insecure - shares the secrets to living the life of your dreams.

Yvonne Orji has never shied away from being unapologetically herself, and that includes being outspoken about her faith. Known for interpreting Biblical stories and metaphors to fit current times, her humorous and accessible approach to faith leaves even non-believers inspired and wanting more.

The way Yvonne sees it, God is a sovereign prankster, punking folks long before Ashton Kutcher made it cool. When she meditates on her own life - complete with unforeseen blessings and unanticipated roadblocks - she realizes it’s one big testimony to how God tricked her into living out her wildest dreams. And she wants us to join in on getting bamboozled. This is not a self-help book - it’s a get-yours book!

In Bamboozled by Jesus, a frank and fresh advice book, Orji takes listeners on a journey through 25 life lessons, gleaned from her own experiences and her favorite source of inspiration: the Bible. But this ain’t your mama’s Bible study. Yvonne infuses wit and heart in sharing pointers like why the way up is sometimes down, and how fear is synonymous to food poisoning. Her joyful, confident approach to God will inspire everyone to catapult themselves out of the mundane and into the magnificent.

With bold authenticity and practical relatability, Orji is exactly the kind of cultural leader we need in these chaotic times. And her journey through being Bamboozled by Jesus paints a powerful picture of what it means to say “yes” to a life you never could’ve imagined - if it wasn’t your own.

- this is a self help book that points you back to the Bible, makes you laugh, cry, and is also an autobiography and crash course on comedy?!?!

- I’ve read this over a year on my phone and it was really a great motivation! Casual yet serious enough for me to take life lessons from! I wish it had a study guide to pair with!

This has quickly become one of my favorite books! I highlighted so much and have recommended it to my family members and friends. I like how Yvonne talks about real life issues but also add humor, Jesus and scripture. I’ve already finished the book but I will probably re read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I was on a deserted island and only allowed one book…

…this would be it. As an “older” white lady from Utah, Yvonne has touched me in a way that makes me want to buy this book for everyone I know. Trust me, I have read a lot of faith based books. I love Philip Yancey’s works. My mother is a devout Catholic that inundates me with books wrote by Catholics (most are pretty good, but not real page turners). None of them compare to Yvonne’s writing style. She is so real, so honest, and so FUNNY. I am sitting up right now at 3am reading her book because I can’t put it down. What an extraordinary woman. I thank God for her and pray that he will send her the man of her dreams soon. Like now God. Seriously.

When I hit “use credit” on Audible to purchase this book, I had zero idea what to expect. I had seen Yvonne’s standup & was intrigued by her story. I needed something to listen to as I walked, but I got more than I was prepared for! I read this book TWICE, back to back! The wisdom, theology motivation and humor in this book will have you wanting more AND getting up and getting yours! If you need some Jesus, laughter and motivation - look no further. Be ready to be bamboozled!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to be encouraged!

After the first few chapters, I had to stop underlining because I was underlining the whole book! I absolutely LOVED the way scripture pours out of Yvonne, and her ability to mix it with contemporary lyrics is unmatched, refreshing, and a rare skill. The Word cannot pour out that naturally from someone who doesn’t soak in it consistently, and Yvonne’s faithfulness is evident in this book.

I understood every single reference she made, and there were times when I burst out laughing, times when her words cut right to my heart, and times when I felt so unbelievably seen and encouraged.

If you are a first generation Nigerian (or African) American, who didn’t choose the DLE route (doctor, lawyer, engineer), this book will help you feel heard, advocated for, and not alone. It’s a reassuring confidence that God truly is at work in our Spirit led rebellion, and doing something new in our lives and family.

It is clear that Yvonne not only knows who her audience is, but she too has embraced who she is and was created to be to the fullest, and her presence in this world in turn liberates others to fully embrace who they were created to be.

In case you can’t tell, I HIGHLY recommend & I’m grateful for this book!
