4.0 out of 5 stars good introduction to savings and investing

First half of the book is on savings and it’s great! Lots of practical advice that is easy to follow. The second half is on investing; it’s good but wish there was more content of various asset allocation strategies, significance of long term treasuries, specific small cap value funds that are good to invest and so on.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh take that goes cookie-cutter advice

I really appreciate the critical thinking in this book. I finally found a book that gets past cliche personal finance advice. This is a digestible, fun read that is chock full of practical analogies, personal stories and data to back it up. Thank you for writing, Nick. I enjoyed every page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice you can act on
Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022
This is the most practical book about personal finance I have ever read. If I could tell beginners in finance and investing to read only one, it would be this one. A lot of financial books forget to lead with practical takeaways that the lay person can go apply. They tend to get off in the weeds with dry technical material that beginners will not be able to use in their lives right away. This book is different. It keeps giving the reader action items and practical takeaways. It also shares another thing that is lacking in many financial books--personal perspective on why people invest in the first place, and how our feelings and attitudes about money drive our decisions and paths in life.

One more thing that makes Nick’s work a breath of fresh air (go read his blog too at ofdollarsanddata.com): he emphasizes evidence-based investing over emotions and impulses. He is the only financial professional I can think of who links you to his code on Github. For non-programmers, what this shows you is that Nick is not holding out on you, trying to hide things to trick you like some financial professionals. Instead, he shows you his methods so that you can try them yourself. I wish there were more people who had this attitude.

Buy this book. Spending twenty dollars on it now could make you a lot of money long-term.

Didn't learn much... most of the insights are well known. Only few nuggets of original wisdom. There are better books...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically readable and insightful.

Everything to say about this book has probably already been said through the thousands of stellar reviews here, which is that this book is amazing and insightful. But I will thank Nick for another reason, which is that in the first day I read the book (the same day I finished it), I discovered that I was misinformed on a huge financial retirement decision I was about to make the next day. The knowledge contained in the book helped me realize what a mistake I was about to make, and I was able to talk to my accountant and course correct. Having just read your most recent blog post (3 Lessons learned from publishing a book), I know that feedback is important, so I wanted to let you know I bought this book about 9 months after listening to your Art of Manliness podcast, and it just took that long for me to finally buy. I'm very glad I did, and I know that you (the reader of this review) will too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for 20 - 40 year olds

I read this before recommending it to my daughter and future son-in-law. Lots of good financial advice and when accompanied by a couple other books would give you everything you need to know to live a financially secure life and retirement.

This book is not geared for quantitative financial analysts as everything is written towards the average reader. Mr. Maggiulli can be as numerically sophisticated as necessary — check out his GitHub if you’re so inclined.
