I am a huge fan of this author. I put her books on preorder and never look at the description, because she has never failed to provide me with an excellent read, starting with Jericho. Seriously, that is a wonderful series. Anyway, I opened The Black Bird of Chernobyl yesterday and started to read and my first thought was ..."huh".

This, to me, is a story of family. Family by blood and family by choice. The setting is not what I expected, as mortuary settings are rare. As always each character was rich and realistic. While it took me a minute to warm up to the main character, Ann McMan did not disappoint. Each chapter was better than the last. It is quirky and fun, but a thread of love runs through it.

I know, that's quite a bold headline for The Black Bird of Chernobyl, but this latest book by Ann McMan will very possibly change your life, or perhaps your end of life decisions. This book made me laugh, a lot. It also made me cry, but most importantly, it made me think. Lila, the beautiful, yet acerbic mortician is the protagonist and her relationship with Sparkle, her too bubbly marketing professional, is so brilliant and engaging you can't put the book down. The eco-friendly funeral alternatives are absolutely fascinating and sensible, thus probably life changing. And as always, Ann McMan's incredible wit and wordsmith skills will amuse and inspire you. Hilarious and truly soulful. I would actually like to give this book 10 stars.
