Only filter I would use, this thing is built solid as a rock, which I should be seen a rock could fly up there and hit the filter with an ATV.

The bolt on the head of these filters make oil changes on motorcycles almost painless. The factory units usually require special filter wrenches/adapters and are a pain to get off without removing fairings or scraping knuckles to get into tight places. With the top bolt on these, you just need a socket and ratchet (maybe an extension and flex-joint in a really tight spot) to tackle the job.

The OEM filter on my Yamaha FZ6R was put on so tight at the factory that the top of the case buckled before the base twisted. It finally had to be removed by puncturing it with a screwdriver and cranking (ripping) it out in pieces... what a mess. I installed the KN-204 instead of another OEM disaster and have never had a problem since then.

I've installed K&N air filters in all of my motorcycles and most of my cars through the past 30 years, and I trust their quality and filtering capabilities. So, I hope that the K&N oil filters are as well-built and reliable. I plan to dissect one of the used filters soon to compare the filter media to the OEM units... I'll try to update my review at a later date with some comparison pictures.

Always prefer to use this brand when I see a sale. Sadly I think the price point is a bit too high lately but I did like that the filter was sealed in plastic with some oil on the rubber O-ring. Nice to have it even though you can lube the O-ring yourself. Since my 2006 Honda Goldwing has limited room to remove the oil filter the nut on the end of the filter is a must have for me. I would buy again if the price was right.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit high priced as oil filters go but quality is high

My only gripe with this largely excellent filter is that the nut on the top (a major selling point because it allows users to install and extract the filter easily, especially in tight spots, with a box-end or socket wrench) is not a precise 17mm (as the manufacturer says it is) and is made of soft aluminum. If the filter is slightly overtightened when installed or gets baked on a bit during use, the nut isn't solid enough to withstand the torquing force required to remove the filter. It strips. And because the manufacturers designed the filter to be removed only with the not, they have not made the filter with flat sides, which would allow for removal with a cartridge filter wrench. Also, be advised that this filter sells for about 15% more than the Yamaha OEM filter and far more than some of the aftermarket brands such as HiLo. Still, it does a good job as a filter, and I've never had a problem with one.
