I was highly skeptical of this product when I first started my research on it. I recently upgraded to a 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium from my previous 2013 Toyota Tacoma TRD T|X Baja. I outfitted my Baja with a K&N CAI, Jet Performance MAF sensor, throttle body spacer, and a Unichip ECM tuning computer. The truck already had an upgraded cat back on it. I performed all those upgrades simultaneously resulting in no clear definition of which upgrade provided specific results.
With my 4Runner, equipped with the same engine from my Tacoma, I knew a different approach would be more financially efficient. The Pedal Commander was the first upgrade I installed, and what a freaking difference. The other reviews detailing the vehicle felt like a completely different car is 100% accurate. It’s crazy how this simple installation produces such prodigious results.
Word of caution, there are a variety of settings available with this unit, upon installation start at the lowest setting on a test drive. On the test drive incrementally increase to a comfortable desired setting. DO NOT START ON THE HIGHEST SETTING FIRST. I’m serious when I state the noticeable change is clearly definable and this unit offer powerful changes. I am currently at Sport -1. I’m comfortable there, and never surpassed Sport 0 mode on my test drive. The sensitivity results in the pedal I feel would make it more cumbersome than I desired to go above my current setting.
Understand there is no actual horsepower increase with this product, but the dramatic engine response time increase will certainly make you believe there has been.
I’ve now added a TRD CAI, throttle body spacer, and Jet Performance MAF sensor to complete my engine upgrades. By far the most impactful has been the Pedal Commander.
As far as fuel economy, I wasn’t adding this product for economic fuel increases. I’m certain under the Eco setting one could obtain quantifiable results. I monitored my fuel economy after initial instillation and have produced similar results to preinstallation which was 17.9 mpg combined. This result might also be caused from my over zealous foot on the gas due the awesome results of this gizmo.
Bottom line, if you have a Toyota 4Runner, this product is a must. The 4.0 utilized in this vehicle is a pure mule - that’s a compliment. This engine will excel off road. It will prevail under arduous conditions. It will haul your stuff. It’s reliable as all get out. It’s time tested and has proven itself as a leader in the market. The one draw back is it’s sluggish road response and lackadaisical speed gain. Mules never win the sprint race, but pure breed race horses are never loaded with 3x’s their own weight to trudge up a mountain. Adding this product to your 4Runner changes all that. The car becomes an absolute joy to drive. Go into this purchase knowing that you purchased a 4Runner and it’ll never lead the sports car pack. Purchasing this Pedal Commander ensures that you can at least run with the pack.
I never leave such lengthy reviews, but I highly depended on other’s reviews during my purchase decision, so I felt obligated to do my part.
Confirming also this product will work in application on a 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium.
