5.0 out of 5 stars Works better than described.

Rarely would I leave a review on a product. Been a mechanic for 50 yrs. usually very skeptical on aftermarket parts. Bought this kit for an old forklift, it is easier to install than to replace points! When finished had much hotter spark, perfect timing and I am impressed. Now if it lasts I’ll be even more pleased.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well on my Mercruiser 3.0L

Installed as instructions stated...well sort of....then I had a blonde moment as I thought the diode fix that was recommended was for my engine. Initially I couldn't get it started, so I called pertronix and while the gentleman and I diagnosed the issue, I asked ....What is an OMC? He said well, thats a brand like mercruiser.....Sooo long story short, if you have a mercruiser engine don't worry about the diode fix for the ESA. Nonetheless once things were the way they should be, boat started right up a few times with no hard starting, no priming, no issues. Combined it with the flamethrower coil. Make sure you have EFI suppression wires and they are not solid core. Luckily I had those already on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Noticeable performance increase, but need to Dremel your cap.

This system fully replaced the old-school points and condenser on my Mercruiser 120.
The installation instructions were clear and concise: my 20 year old daughter was able to retrofit the ignition system, including Flamethrower coil, in 1 hour. And she has fingernails and long hair.
The unexpected part was the need to grind out a 1/8" groove in the distributor cap for one of the new wires. I had a Dremel, and it took a minute or two to get it just right. Now YOU know.
The engine fires right up and has no misfire at low speed like the original breaker point system. Top end has improved.
I highly recommended this modification.

5.0 out of 5 stars All absolutely astounding engine change! Smooth performance.

This electronic ignition does exactly as promised. I installed mine into a Four Winns , 4 cylinder marine, and noticed an immediate change in engine performance. First, it ignited with barely a crank of the starter. Then, I had to turn the idle screw so it didn't idle quite so fast! After running the boat out for about 2 hours I had to again adjust the idle down. Easy to install. The instructions were simple. Treat yourself to new coil at the same time. I matched my Petronix Ignitor to a Petronix FlameThower coil for my boat. Good combo. Lose the points and condenser.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pertronix Electronic Ignition

This product was an easy install that took about 10 minutes to complete. Directions were easy to follow and straight forward. This kit was installed into my boat and it has been operating fine on the original coil. I wish I did this years ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Replaced our 11 yr old electronic ignition in our MM 336
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023
Our MM 336 power unit went down during irrigation season and we found this unit as a replacement for our 2012 install ignition. We did have to upgrade the coil as well vs the Napa one we had been running.

5.0 out of 5 stars not another five star review

Face it, if you are reading the five star reviews on this crap product you are just trying to talk yourself into making the purchase. Forget it! Run away as fast as you can. This electronic ignition is just going to burn out your coil in record time.

I purchased the Pertronix 40511 Flame-Thrower 40,000 volt 3.0 in conjunction with the PertTronix 1146A Ignitor to convert my 1983 Mercruiser 3.7 470 to electronic ignition. This is the second time I have purchased this pair. The first time I got everything installed, the boat ran great for about fifteen minutes then started to miss horribly. Luckily I had tools and the mechanical points plate with me. Fifteen minutes at the sand bar and I was back out pulling tubes. I sent that first set back frustrated. Eventually I figured it must be a fluke. I had to try again, I just wanted that nice fast start and reliable electronic ignition on my awesome 3.7 470. I have owned the boat for years and the only issues I have ever had are points needing to be set/cleaned. So I bought this pair again, I was sure I was going to have success. I installed it all just like I did the first time. Running the boat on muffs in the driveway I turned the ignition key to start the engine. Turned over didn't fire, but... the power wire from the electronic ignition plate definitely started on fire. Burning right up. Its an electronic fire so I blew it out and it started right back up. I burned/cut the hell out of my finger grabbing the burning wire and pulling it to break the circuit. Conveniently the fire cauterized the cut caused by the wire which I had to break. These wires are not that far from the fuel system, this could have been much worse. I'm not a master mechanic but I am not an idiot, there was something wrong with my first one and there was something very different and dangerously wrong with my second. Maybe its the coil. At first I didn't know what wire burned up. Luckily it was the Pertronix wire and not part of my fully intact wiring harness. I am very relieved I am not shopping or a new wiring harness. Now all the power on my boat is completely dead. I'm hoping it just dumped the battery charge into this wire fire. I do not know yet. Maybe it damaged something else? The wire was all melted and burned inside the cap, burned and melted outside the cap, it just burned away right up near the ignition coil. I am definitely not ever going to try this again. Instead I am just going to keep honing my mechanical ignition gap setting and cleaning skills. I am also just going to keep an extra mechanical ignition plate all gapped and ready in the boat. So I can switch them out whenever I need to. If this fire happened with the cowl down while under way, my whole family could have been dead on the water.
