Make sure it is connected to the battery directly to get accurate readings. It is easy to set up and use. Best of all, it is cheap.

Work's great I checked my battery with this device and it was easy to use and it was accurate it showed that I had a bad battery cell when the dealership said I had a good battery I went to Advanced Auto and got a better battery and warranty plus they installed it free. I recommend this device.

Right out of the box, hooked up to my Jeep battery and tested battery and CCA. Battery tested good. Helped me to continue troubleshooting a charge issue with my electrical system. Ultimately found a bad alternator fuse. Will keep this in my Jeep to troubleshoot any problems in the field.

I've used this on a few vehicles, including a motorcycle, since I got it. I've used the battery test, the starting test, and charging system functions, and all are easy to use and the results are easy to read and interpret. It did properly diagnose a failing battery in one of our cars. The biggest tell was the starting test, showing excessive voltage drop when starting the car. It definitely explained the dash lighting up like a Christmas tree when driving some days, as well as the electric power steering having trouble at low engine speeds! Every home mechanic needs one of these in their toolbox.

This small unit does a (very) fast load test on a battery and deduces its health from that test.

Better than a DVM.
Much cheaper than a shop-grade Automotive Battery Tester.
Easy to use. Detects most Battery Problems.

Pros:
1. Easy to Use, Compact and Inexpensive.
2. Tests wide variety of 12V Auto Batteries.
3. Checks Engine Starting and Battery Charging health.

Cons:
1. Skimpy Manual with small TypeFont.
2. Valid Analysis depends on correct CCA and Battery type inputs.
3. Can’t confirm battery performance at low temperature.

Precautions:
Test the battery directly at it's terminals. Some cars like Hybrids, have Remote Jump Start terminals. Using the more convenient Engine bay terminals may give false 'BAD Battery' results.

Detailed Analysis:
1. Tested one 3S 12.5V Lithium Battery, four AGM Flat-Plate Batteries, four FloodedCell LeadAcid batteries, six autos (Two Hybrids), and two inboard V8 Boats.
2. Detection of common issues:
a. GOOD: Charging System healthy voltages and quality (AC Ripple).
b. GOOD: Low battery voltages, bad cells, loss of capacity.
c. GOOD: Cranking current under test conditions and comparison to Rated Cold Cranking Current.
d. MARGINAL: No direct indication of battery capacity (Amp-Hour Capacity). 5 year old Flooded Pb Starter battery with only 1 Amp-Hour usable capacity tested as good when charged.
e. MARGINAL: Probably not able to predict all Cold Starting issues.

December 2023 Update: AVOID testing batteries in Hybrid vehicles from the remote 'Jump Start' Ports! Picking the Test Standard (CCA, MCA, etc.):
1. I tested a 4year old Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Battery and it reported a low Cranking Amp Reading with a recommendation to "REPLACE" when tested at the 'Jump Start' Posts in the engine compartment (The 12V battery is in the Left Rear Side compartment inside the minivan). When the battery was removed and tested directly at the battery., they results was "GOOD" battery with a nominal ColdCrankingAmp reading.
2. There are a large number of 'Test Standards' including CCA, MCA, etc. to choose. For example, most Starter batteries in the US are rated for CCA (Cold Cranking Amps at 0F). Use this to provide an accurate assessment against the Battery's Rating. Use the MCA (Marine Cranking Amps) for boat applications where the operating temperature is 32F. The MCA readings will be generally higher (better) than the CCA.
