1.0 out of 5 stars Weak shaver
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2021
Got this razor and gave it a quick inspection and a full charge right out of the box. Went to try it out. It took 30 minutes to get a rough shave. I usually shave every other or 3rd day. My beard isn't thick and it doesn't grow very fast. It takes me a week to get that '3 day look'. I last shaved 2 days ago.

The razor was weak and didn't shave very well at all. It seemed to rip the hairs out of my face rather than cut them effectively. My face was sore when I finished and I had some razor burn. It wasn't a close shave at all.

The razor was very easy to clean and seemed well built, just very weak. This would be why everyone says it's nice and quiet. I'll take a bit more noise and a product that works well any day.

I've been using a Braun 3040s (about $30) for many years. I've had 2 so far, wore the first one out and my current one is needing replaced as well. I thought I'd try something else because I was tired of using replacement heads and foils that cost 80% of a new unit. I also don't care for the idea of trashing a perfectly good item just because a single wearable piece needs replacing. I've never had a problem with the Braun other than that.

This Norelco is going back and I'll try a newer Braun, maybe one of the 6 series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Runs slow, poor battery, shaves badly
Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2023
I have been using some variant of this style of Norelco electric shaver for more than 30 years. Every day. And this one is horrible. I bought this when the batteries on my last Norelco wore out, for the second time. I usually take them apart and replace the batteries when they begin to need charging after only a few days. Historically, these Norelco shavers are so well built that I can replace the batteries once before I retire them and buy another new shaver.

On this shaver, the batteries will spin the heads for about 30 seconds before they start slowing. Slow spin means that it won't cut well, and it irritates your skin. After a 3-minute shave, the battery shows about half-charge -- you need to recharge this shaver every day.

After about a week of lousy shaves, I took this shaver apart and replaced the batteries with premium quality rechargeable batteries. Actually, the batteries that came with it were a premium brand (LG) rated only slightly lower capacity than the best available in that size. And, with new premium batteries installed, the shave performance was the same as before: terrible.

I have an old Norelco model that I bought 15 years ago that still shaves well -- I keep it for when I am traveling. I was on a trip recently, and noticed how much better it shaves than this newer model. And my 15-year-old Norelco shaver still holds charge for a week of traveling.

I am really disappointed with Norelco.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great razor for the price
Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2024
I have a previous model of this shaver. That one has been working for me since around 2007. The only reason I'm replacing it is that the battery is getting weak. This is a great replacement. The build quality is solid, and I'm getting a great save. It's not as tight as a blade razor, but it's good enough for me, and it gets the job done fast.

The only letdowns are that it doesn't come with a charger, and the bag that holds it feels cheap. My previous model had a formed padded travel case. I get it. Everyone has at least one extra USB-A charger lying around. However, it would have been nice. And, a formed travel case wouldn't be able to hold the proprietary charging cable. That's right, it's proprietary. Don't lose it, or you'll have to talk with Norelco for a new one. In their defense, that's the same connector as my previous razor. It allows it to rest upright in the stand without damage, which is not something you could do with standard USB connectors. It also allows one to use it as a wet/dry razor. Again, don't lose the cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well! Incredibly Quiet!
Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2024
It's so quiet that I wonder if it's actually running a full speed. It seems like it's running slow but it shaves very well so I'm not complaining. I hear whiskers being cut more that the razor itself. It doesn't have any bells and whistles, just indicates how much charge is left. I've used it half a dozen times and it still shows full charge.

UPDATE!
After using this for a couple of months, I notice my shave were not nearly as close when it was new. I discovered that just rinsing it out after each shave DOES NOT CLEAN THE BLADES! You must remove the blades, completely disassemble them, and rinse them out until nothing remains behind. WORKS LIKE NEW NOW. Do this evey 3-6 shaves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buy a different razor.
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2021
I received this razor as a gift from my wife just a couple months ago. I usually use a straight razor, but sometimes I will use an electric. As such, since receiving this razor in mid-January 2021, I have used it perhaps ten times. I really liked the razor. It is light, attractively designed, and gives a relatively close shave compared to a blade. I have had Norelco razors for most of the fifty years I have been shaving. The problem with this Philips version of Norelco's razor is that it simply dropped dead last evening. I have no idea why. I had just started using it and suddenly there was a clunk sound and it stopped running. When I try to turn it on again, it works for a few seconds and then it gives a scraping sound and stops. I am confident that the issue is in the head, not the body. The head is clearly cheaply made, almost chintzy. This razor's head does not even come close to the quality we used to get from Norelco. I am amazed that Amazon shows thousands of good reviews for this razor. I, personally, have come to doubt the bona fides of Amazon reviews and positive counts. If my razor dropped dead as it did last evening after less than a dozen uses, I would bet that many others have done the same. You are best advised to pass on this razor and find a different brand. A real Norelco is no more.
