A layer of about an inch of stuffing provides mechanical filtration, better than a sponge (which I also use). Tiny particles of debris cling to it. A few times each month I remove the old, now brownish, Poly-Fil and replace it with a layer of new, clean Poly-Fill.
The best deal on this product was Poly-Fil's 32 oz bag, but that is now at a much too high price, so I bought this instead.
