  • Such an interesting read!
Tailored Realities ended up being a really interesting look into the mind of one of my favorite authors. I’ve read a lot of Sanderson’s stuff, but this collection really shows how many different directions his brain can go. He bounces between genres and tones all over the place, but his writing is still super easy to fall into, which is something I’ve always enjoyed about him.

What I liked most is how different all the stories feel, but they still have that “Sanderson” vibe to them. Some are funny, some are pretty weird, some get a little darker, but they’re all creative in their own way. My favorite was the dragon one — the whole idea was just fun and kind of ridiculous in the best way.

I also really liked the little notes he puts at the end of each story. Honestly, those might’ve been my favorite part. It feels like he’s just chatting with you about why he wrote something or what he was trying out, and it made the whole book feel more personal.

Overall, it’s a cool mix of stories and ideas, and I loved seeing this side of his writing. If you like his style at all, or just want something a bit different from him, I’d definitely say give it a read.
  • A Strong Mix of Sanderson’s Sci Fi Experiments
“Tailored Realities” landed at four stars for me, a collection of mostly sci fi shorts and novellas that shows Sanderson having fun outside the Cosmere while still doing what he does best with hooks and worldbuilding. “Snapshot,” “Defending Elysium,” and the new “Moment Zero” were standouts, built on sharp premises that carry both tension and real emotional weight, while smaller pieces like “Brain Dump” and “Probability Approaching Zero” read more like quick idea sketches.

Not every entry hit at the same level for me, and “Mitosis” and “Firstborn” in particular will land best for readers already invested in those series or tropes, yet even the weaker stories kept me turning pages.

The real surprise is how much the author notes deepen the experience, framing each story as part of a larger creative experiment and making the whole book feel more intentional than a simple grab bag.

I appreciated the chance to read an advance copy from Tor Books through NetGalley.
  • Gripping collection!
Tailored Realities is a gripping collection of stories from Brandon Sanderson which I thoroughly enjoyed. The stories vary in theme and length but each grab the reader and as a group provide an enjoyable experience. Standout stories for me included Snapshot, Firstborn, and Defending Elysium. Of course the newest story Moment Zero is a great addition and ends the collection with a “bang”. Almost as interesting as the stories themselves are the author’s postscripts. Overall a great read and worth picking up.
