  • Absolutely excellent!
As a trans man, the representation of trans characters in this book is incredibly accurate, and incredibly interesting to boot. The story’s awesome, the characters are compelling, and this isn’t just a trauma fest like 90% of the books I’ve read with trans protagonists. I only wish there were more books like this one out there!

Dinniman does it again. I was worried that I wouldn't see past Dungeon Crawler Carl but I really didn't think about it until now. Because of the genre there are some similarities but that is a genre thing not an author being lazy. There were some aspects to the story that I could have done without and the story still would have worked. I will definitely continue to read the series.
  • A Refreshing, Gritty Spin on the LitRPG Genre
Pros: > * Incredible world-building that feels lived-in and decaying.

A unique "NPC-first" perspective that subverts the usual tropes.

Deep emotional feeling, extremely real feelings in a fantasy world.

Cons: > * It’s a bit darker than your average "power fantasy" game-lit.

Summary: This isn't just a book about numbers going up; it’s a story about identity and survival in a digital wasteland. Dinniman creates a world where the "glitches" are terrifying and the humor is sharp. Highly recommended for fans of Ready Player One who want something with more teeth.
  • crazy read for the non gamers of which I am one
So fun and scary imagine not being able to stay dead or having to go through a process to come back to wake in a game and figure out who and what you really are definitely interesting
  • Fun litRPG
The first paragraph feels a bit misleading to me. Those things happened, but have virtually no bearing on the story. Jonah wakes up from having been stuck in a loop as a NPC in the game without having any memory. Together with two other players who suffered the same fate, they decide to go the ruler of the world to learn what is going on. The trip is far from easy and while on the road they learn more about themselves and on what is going on. The funny thing about that first paragraph in the blurb, by the time you learn about it in the story, you also know that that has nothing to do with current events.

Personally I liked the story and the twists. Game elements are simple, with most choices having been made by others. I like the mystery, and the twists at the end which make it much of a SF game as most litRPGs. What is going on outside of the game, even if the current story takes place inside, has a big role. I am really curious what is going on and what direction the story is going to take. Looking forward to part 2.
  • You know what you’re getting.
Matt is the only guy on earth (as far as I have observed) who can write a story with stats and levels and abilities and have it actually be not embarrassing. More than that, his stories are really engaging and always intelligently plotted. I think it’s because he never just hand waves “the system” away. There’s always a real story independent of the existence of whatever is causing the characters to experience life as an rpg.

Unfortunately this story has some current year propaganda, but it also has brutal torture scenes, so if you were planning to let a young kid (or even a teen) read this you have bigger issues than some slop for the modern audience.
  • sorry Matt
This book was barely readable. I did like the first and last chspters. Maybe some of the issue was the audio narrator. I alao could do without sexual orientation being thrown in? Im a big fan of dungeon crawler carl. Probably diminushed my enjoyment as the RPG didnt deliver
  • Excellent
I read the first 7 Dungeon Crawler Carl books, and I decided to read the DoB books while I wait for the next Carl book to drop. This is great! I'm old; I started playing D&D in 1979. Matt Dinniman has captured the essence of RPGs, with great humor, while imbuing his characters with depth, complexity, and relatability. Highly recommend!
