- Cjade824Solid gate for pets and kids, but more semi-permanent than portableI got this gate for my dogs so we can leave the door open on nice days without them running in and out. It works great once it’s set up, but there are a few things I wish I’d known before buying it.
This isn’t the kind of gate you can pop in and out quickly. It’s more of a semi-permanent setup. You can remove it, but when you do, the end pieces will fall out, so it’s a bit of a hassle if you plan to move it often. If that’s your plan, you might want a one-piece gate instead.
Once it’s installed though, it’s very sturdy. The pressure needs to be just right or the door won’t close properly, so make sure you measure your doorway and figure out which extenders you’ll need before setting it up. It took me a little trial and error to get everything aligned, but once I did, it fit perfectly. My doorway is 38 inches and I used both extenders.
Now that it’s in place, it’s doing exactly what I wanted, the dogs can’t run out or bark every time someone walks by the backyard. Huge win! The gate door itself opens easily for adults, but it has a double-latch safety feature that would also make it great for babies or toddlers.
Overall, once you get it set up, it’s sturdy and works really well. Just expect to spend a little time getting it right at first. - Eric KonynenbeltLove it!So simple to set up, super sturdy! Love this for keeping my kiddo safe and my dogs on the main level!! Bonus it looks nice too!
- tika zaneI Freaking Love It!!!I’ve wasted so much money on other gates and mesh doorway barriers, but this one is perfect! I didn’t want to drill holes into my walls or my bulky wooden gate, and this safety gate was exactly what I needed. Super easy to install and very sturdy!
I actually bought two — one to keep my pup in his personal area, and another wedged between my gate and side porch to keep him in the backyard. Both work perfectly! Couldn’t be happier with this purchase. ???? - LlyzaardWould purchase again; many negative reviews are user errorI bought the regular and extended sizes for two different areas of my house. The gates were easy to install and seem to work as described. I haven’t had any of the latch issues that other reviewers reported, but I just bought it, so we’ll see.
I gave it 4 stars simply because I could not get the latch gap to be even, and I’m anal retentive so it drove me crazy. This could probably be fixed if I could tighten the bottom pressure bolts more, but my fingers just weren’t strong enough, and my pliers kept scratching up the plastic, so I gave up (I even tried wrapping the pliers in cloth to decrease damage, but then I couldn’t get a grip strong enough to turn them). Anyway, they used to just use regular metal bolts which made adjusting the pressure mounts way easier. Yes, the gray “bolts” look nicer, but the regular bolts were more functional. You could always switch the gray pieces out with regular bolts if you wanted to. I just installed these late at night and wanted it done. I may do that in the future at some point.
All that being said, I would like to state that a good portion of the negative reviews on this gate are user error. The amount of people that don’t know how to measure or can’t read instructions baffles me. First off, assuming you have all the parts it says you’re supposed to have, if you measure your doorway correctly, and it says it will fit, it will. If it doesn’t, you either measured wrong or are mounting it wrong. One reviewer complaining that the gate didn’t fit their 38” doorway/stairway posted a picture of their measurement, but it didn’t actually show the entire step in the picture, so her evidence is null. Second, the latch looks crooked and does not connect when taken out of the box - this is normal for pressure mounted gates - always has been. Mount it correctly, and the gap will close. Third, a couple of people complained that the plastic inserts that you have to remove to add the extenders were “impossible to remove.” I removed them very easily by inserting the bolt and wiggling it out. Fourth, a couple of people complained that it was unsafe at the top of the stairs. Well, in all fairness, the manual warns that the gate should not be used at the top of stairs. You’re technically not supposed to use pressure mounted gates at the top of stairs period. So, think about what you’re installing the gate for before doing it. If you’re going to let your kid hang all over the gate, it’s probably not a good idea to mount it where they can fall down 15 stairs. Also, it’s always a good idea to double check the pressure bolts about once per month. Daily use will cause things to loosen; it’s just common sense.
Anywho, as of right now, I would purchase these gates again if I needed to. If an issue turns up in the future, I will update my review! - IndiaSturdy and easy to useSuper easy to install and love that you can latch it by just pushing it closed. Perfect size for a normal doorway. Great quality and will be buying more for different rooms!
- Dr. JWorks great, doesn't need permanent mountingI have 4 kids so I'm not a noob to baby gates. That said, we do have a dog that we like to keep out of certain areas of the house, especially when guests are staying over as he has a tendency to "mark his territory" but only when people are staying with us. He isn't a pushy dog, meaning he's not going to challenge a gate or jump over it.
I got this gate specifically for a few reasons:
- wide opening - the opening in question is 46" and not many walkthrough gates can expand that far
- it doesn't require hardmounting, meaning noting screws into the wall/walkway unless you want to (even the included doublestick pads aren't necessary)
- the walkthrough feature works either way
- tensioning/adjustment seems easy
Installation was a breeze; there are 2 side extensions in the box, just choose your width and select the number of extensions you need (consult easy chart/assembly instructions provided), move around some of the included inserts, put in the tensioning assemblies (bolts with rubber pads on the end), put in the opening, and tension away. The trickiest part is getting the tension right on both sides of the gate such that it doesn't bow or otherwise throw the entire thing out of alignment or the latch mechanism won't line up. As I mentioned, you don't have to use the included "cups" that adhere (or screw) to the wall/jamb - the adjustment tensioning pads are rubber so they grip the wall fairly well anyway.
What might be an issue for some is that the latch is a compound one and does not autolock simply by shutting the gate - it requires you to manually latch/lock it every time. So, I'm not sure I'd use this where you need an easy walktrough and relock. At the top/bottom of stairs it might be tricky as well (e.g. if you're carrying something).
All in all a good gate that looks nice, was easy to install and didn't break the bank.
