    Content & Organization
The book thoughtfully curates 100 must-do experiences, allowing travelers to explore Japan’s rich diversity. Each activity or destination is neatly organized, from classic sights like cherry blossom-viewing or bathing in an onsen, to culinary adventures, niche festivals, and hidden gems only locals know. The guide blends iconic attractions—like Kyoto’s temples, Tokyo’s neon, or Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial—with off-the-beaten-path ideas in rural villages, art islands, and mountain retreats.
Each experience is paired with practical info: best seasons, tips for visiting, accessibility notes, and how to make the most of every stop. The writing is enthusiastic but clear, helping readers both dream big and plan realistically.

    High-quality photography and inviting layout
Clear travel tips and cultural context for each entry
Suitable for both planners and dreamers
Makes a memorable gift for anyone Japan-bound
    Cons:

  • Absolutely a fabulous guide to planning the "Trip of a Lifetime" to Japan
I bought this without even noticing it was from DK, which is a travel publisher (and more) that I trust. Bonus when it arrived, I was happy it was DK quality! It's hardcover, the photos are not glossy but matte. [DK usually is full color glossy, but this was in no way detrimental.

There are some great photos and ideas galore for making the most of a Once in Lifetime trip, experiencing the best of Japan. I hope someday to take a trip and immerse mysel in some of the experiences they mention. Forebxample,
    I would love to:
    * Ride transit alongside Studio Gibli/H.Miyazaki creations from "Spirited Away"
    * See a kabuki play, with the signature attention to detail and traditions.
    * Take in the sights by train traversing the coastline...
    * Visit a sea of hydrangeas planted by a monk, creating a beautiful meditative backdrop ...
When I travel, I find it is important to structure in some time for reflection often.] DK did a great job of suggesting places just so.

The chapter endpapers are traditional Japanese Sashiko patterns, which I thought added more dimension to the book. They do not mention sashiko, and I think it is because there was so much of Japan as a destination to cover!
However, a sentence or two might have fit in well with the mention of traditional arts with the indigo plants and dyes. This indigo was the backdrop for Sashiko -- white thread on indigo fabric, patterns of various geometric styles were stitched into clothing to strengthen it, repair it, and make the most of clothing. This type of visible mending has hit the world by storm lately, and you can find designers using sashiko and boro, especially on denim. Sashiko crafters have their own annotations to add, when visiting Japan: Where to get supplies!
  • Great book
Gorgeous coffee table book with plenty of pictures and tips for a trip to Japan. I've never gone, but this book is giving me plenty of ideas!
  • Wonderful reference
This is a beautiful book. It is a great reference and give amazing information. I went to Japan for 13 days, and I saw a lot. This book helped me realize how many amazing sights and locations I missed. There is so much that 100 experiences seems far from complete itself. However, I also noticed that many of the amazing things I experienced on my trip were not referenced in the book either. Again, there is no way one book could cover all of it. The photos are awesome and the information is extensive and relatively up to date. Things in the book for the most part will not give specifics of times and prices, but locations or experiences instead. The pages are not glossy, but it is a great thing to help plan a dream trip. I think it was a great value for the wealth of information.
  • A very nice book about Japan
This book was a nice addition to my coffee table, as it gives a good picture of activities in Japan, and is nice to look at.
