This is an important read for all of us who love sports and are curious, if not deeply concerned, about how gambling has infiltrated the games.

If you follow sports to at least a moderate degree (whether a gambler or not) there are few surprises here, as most of this ground is covered in day to day reporting, podcasts and the like. But those who have a more balanced approach to life will find a lot of news to be alarmed by. The reporting is serious and detailed, and to this reader feels like a series of well-crafted long form articles put together in book form (not a bad thing). One minor criticism is the heavy reliance on single subject interviews in some chapters, and the tendency to empty out the notebook with even insignificant quotes if given by a public sports figure. But overall, well done and even despite the discouraging subject matter, enjoyable.
A new scandal broke in January 2026 just after publication of this book, the investigation of a large number of college basketball players who allegedly took bribes to underperform or ensure their teams did not cover point spreads. This book is going to need a second volume as these sports gambling scandals inevitably continue in the next few years, and I hope Mr. Funt will write that when the time comes.
