- Michael L. DennisGreat formatRoyal Shakespeare Company -- William Shakespeare Complete Works Second Edition
First of all, realize that this book is pretty substantial in size and weight, but it is the best single volume collection of Shakespeare's plays that I have found.
Some notes about the formatting:
* This volume is single column vs the more typical two column layouts one sees in older works. Which works really well even for those sections which are structured as poetry. It adds a pleasing white space on each page.
* The font has a more modern feel with character names in a bold non-serifed typeface. The text itself is serifed, but it has very clean lines. Older texts that have the muddy, tired fonts are, to me, somewhat a hinderance to just enjoying the plays themselves.
* The additional white space including a decent margin are great for making notations, although I am not certain whether the paper thinness will cause bleed through.
* The page headings include the name of the play and the act and scene number.
* Beautiful color plates at the beginning of the book showing scenes from Royal Shakespeare Company productions
* Text notes are clean, brief, and unobtrusive on the page, with no distracting reference symbol in the text itself.
I've seen a couple reviews that mention 2 gold ribbon markers. My edition has only one.
Sewn binding. Board covers.
I also appreciated the inclusion of Shakespeare's poetry. - GR HeronOne of the best complete Shakespeare worksI have owned other books which are complete words of Shakespeare in the past. This version is by far the best that I have come across. My main complaints about those was that the print was so fine even with reading glasses It was difficult to read. It was smaller than some versions of Bibles that I have seen. This publishers version as small print but it is easy to read with a pair of reading glasses. It also includes background information and footnotes about each play and photos from the Royal Shakespeare company which are a big bonus to me. If you are looking for a volume containing the complete works of Shakespeare this is definitely one that is worth a look.
- Jennifer N. EdmondsonComprehensive and insightfulBreathtaking cover and amazing content. There is a lot of analysis of the works in the margins and it is fairly concise. It is a great addition to my bookshelf. Be aware that the book is massive; it is heavy and large so this is not the book you want to haul back and forth to class or take with you on a vacation. This is a serious deep dive - reference like book of Shakespeare.
- Largo Lawn GirlHardcover, Tabletop QualityHardcover William Shakespeare Complete Works Second Edition (Modern Library) sits nicely on a side table for easy reference, or reading pleasure. The book is about a 8.5" x 11". Beautiful jacket cover design. In addition to the quality paper and clean fonts, Harvard Bookstore offerred the following commentary "Edited by a brilliant team of "younger generation" Shakespearean scholars from the First Folio originally assembled by Shakespeare's own acting company, this edition of the Complete Works corrects centuries of errors and textual variations that have evolved since the book's publication in 1623. "
- thankfulheartHeavy!I bought this for my class. It’s nice because it has all the books in one. But this is heavy!!!!
- KadotaVery nice!I own the first edition of this and was kind of hesitant to buy another copy much the same. The only differences I knew of were that it had more notes and stage notes, and I knew it was larger. There was a price drop yesterday and I went ahead and placed an order. I received it today and I am awed by it's quality and size. This is the nicest book I own, I am so happy that I decided to buy this. The pages are on high quality paper and the type is rich and clear. The binding is woven and seems strong. I am a very happy buyer today.
- J.L. LeeTry Using a Hand-Held Magnifier if Small Print Tires Your EyesI love this book. Yes, it is heavy--about 7 pounds. Yes, the print is very small--smaller than print in regular print books. Yes, the print in the voluminous footnotes and sonnets is even smaller. However, while I can see such small print clearly without using visual aids, trying to read such small print for long periods of time definitely causes my eyes to tire. So years ago, I purchased some large 5" diameter hand-held magnifiers to use when reading small print books. These magnifiers work perfectly for me when reading this book. Consequently, unlike several other people who purchased and then returned this book because of the small print, I am going to keep it.
- Chris VlasakWhat a great value!Stunning. Very heavy, sturdy, and well made.
