- lclarke1Great read!!When I saw this book was coming out I could not wait to get my hands on it and I was not disappointed in this read at all.
Judge Stone is a no nonsense southern judge in a small county. She is faced with the trial of the century in her county with the world looking at what the outcome will be while also fighting to keep her family land and outside forces that want to remove her from not only this case but her judgeship. In a case that pits races against each other as well as right to life vs pro choice against each other this was an addictive read that I could not put down once I started while remaining on the edge of my seat to see the outcome of the story.
Viola Davis narrated this addictive read and she made for an enjoyable narrator. I will admit that at times I wished that there was a full cast to portray this story to make following it easier at times.
This story started at go and did not stop until the end and I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Mary Stone really anchors the novel as a uniquely grounded protagonist. Her dual identity creates someone easily identified with as her personal history, family connection to the land, and her sharp legal mind make her extremely compelling. The courtroom scenes, the various characters and players, as well as the other events surrounding this huge case kept me absolutely riveted and I couldn’t put this book down. The drama was very high stakes as the topic of abortion is so very controversial and timely. The town and people are caught up in this firestorm both politically and legally. Definitely polarizing and the story demonstrates the high cost of legislation and rulings that make no exceptions. I felt all the emotions going through this traumatic ordeal.
As usual, the pacing was excellent and the collaboration is so well done. I don’t know if this is being considered as the first in a series featuring this memorable character, but I welcome any future installment. I’m addicted to legal dramas and thrillers.
I was lucky enough to be able to listen to the audio book while also following along in the e-book. The narrator, Viola Davis, is perfection. Her voice, her dramatic flair, and her talent just amplify the personality and gravitas of the main character. She transitions easily to voicing other characters as well and created a truly immersive experience that made me enjoy the book even more. Don’t miss this production!

I was completely immersed in this story.
Judge Mary Stone is a force to be reckoned with. This story is an intense courtroom drama. I read this book so fast. I do love the short chapters that the amazing James Patterson is known for.
Set in the south in Alabama Judge Stone is at the center of a controversial court case that will leave you in shock.
This story is far from predictable. There are some intense, hard issues that that both authors handle with a delicate hand.
The character of Judge Stone is one that I absolutely LOVED. Soft but firm. Her story is one you won't soon forget!

TLDR: possibly the best book of the *last decade*
First, I would like to say that having Viola Davis herself as the narrator is (unsurprisingly) a fantastic, refreshing, and truly meaningful aspect of the book. She has such a strong presence in depicting characters on the spectrum of the law system, and a perfect personality to represent the judge. Her confidence, strength and power of her voice translate so well, I dont think anyone could have narrated Judge Mary better. The fact that she narrated both the story of Nova and Dr. Gaines, only adds to the darkness and heartfulness of the story. Bravo for a stunning production!
Speaking about the book itself, I had no doubt that the talented Davis and the king of mystery Patterson will weave a beautiful story. I just didn't expect it to be so emotionally provoking and heartbreaking. As a Pediatrician, listening to this book brought up SO many emotions in me. I was angry to a point of slamming my fist on the steering wheel (I listen to it while driving to and from the hospital); sad to the point of tears in several parts of the book, truthfully scared and confused for both Dr. Gaines, Mary herself and the community.
The last time a book touched such a deep medical trauma and approached complex ethical concept in such a phenomenal way, was Jodi Picoult's "spark of light" in 2018. Judge Stone made me feel proud to be a physician in the south. This story has so many layers of depth it was truly an honor to read it. I hope that when the movie production inevitably comes, it will be Viola Davis herself as Judge Mary.
"Judge Stone" is a masterpiece. Five stars does not do it justice.
