You know how some books get written into the fabric of your being? Daggermouth is that book for me. I’ve been struggling to put into words how incredible this story is. Wolfe creates a timely story inside a rich world with complex characters you love and loathe. I am not one to gravitate towards dystopian novels cos LOOK AROUND WE IN ONE but reading a quote about starving the poor while our admin literally starves the poor hit on a different level. The Heart felt like a mirror to the billionaires and corrupt government we deal with where some days cruelty does feel like the point of their policies.
Maximus Serel may be the most hateful character I’ve ever experienced reading. Getting his POV on situations truly cemented how warped and evil he was YET he’s smart and always two steps ahead, it was so hard to stomach, and it added so much depth to the plot.
The underlying themes of misogyny and female revolution were woven into the story brilliantly. You understand these women, empathize with them, are them. We’ve all experienced feeling less than due to our sex while knowing that we are the driving force behind progress. The scenes at the end of women’s rage and awakening were so powerful. A particular female’s monologue on women enduring garnered a standing ovation from my living room.
This story is told perfectly from third person POV giving you insight in every character’s life and motivations while watching the story come together seamlessly. Wolfe is a freaking magician in how well she conveyed raw emotion from each character’s perspective. I cried over EVERYONE. and ON TOP OF ALL THAT Wolfe gives us multiple love stories that you’re immediately invested in. You feel like you’ve known these characters forever and understand their feelings for one another. We also get true enemies to lovers between Shadera and Greyson with all the tension, angst, banter and st@bbing that makes this trope the funnest to read.
Speaking of Shadera MF Kael, an alter has been built in my heart where I light candles in my devotion to her. Strong, resilient, smart, quick, hot, vulnerable, powerful, she is EVERYTHING.
I could honestly keep going but you just need to go ahead and download this bad boy. You will rage, you will swoon, you will cry. You’ll be changed. - PriyaStart off Dystopian December with the perfect read - pick this up NOW!Are you looking for a TRUE enemies-to-lovers romance in a dystopian world where their foreplay includes violence (maybe guns)?

Then you NEED this book!
What I loved:
WRITING
I knew this book was special the second I read the following line:
"Fear is a solvent Greyson - it dissolves doubt, resistance, the very concept of alternative. But only if administered pure. If you dilute it, even a little, the city will learn to adapt."
I had CHILLS. The imagery, creativity, and potency of the prose throughout the story is so immersive, captivating, and impactful. Everything you could ever want in a dystopian story. You want to feel it all… the plight of the characters’ unique situations, the stakes of the rebellion, the courage it takes to make a stand despite logic and past trauma warning against it, and the moments of bliss amidst the chaos and ruin… Honestly this is some of my favorite writing from a composition and execution standpoint!
229. That is how many sections I had highlighted on my kindle over the course of reading this book (I’m not normally that active with my highlights). Simply put, this is a book that will make you feel…everything.
CHARACTERS
This is a dark story. We get the POVs of multiple key players (including the villain) which makes for such a unique experience. All of the characters are well-developed, each with their own histories, desires, and motivations. You will want to root for them despite each of them having flaws and blurred lines of morality they need to contend with. They face countless obstacles that are thrown their way by the misogynistic, violent pig of a President of New Found Haven that will have your whole body clenching. It was fascinating to see how people from within the rings and the Heart have all been brutalized by the current ways. The manners of their suffering is different, but connects them all the same.
TROPES
Feminine Rage
The abuse and suffering women are subjected to in this world is hard to witness. But we are shown that the women of this world have endured and their experiences have hardened them. A reckoning is on the horizon… and I cannot wait for the next book to come out.
Enemies to Lovers
Both Shade and Greyson have very valid reasons to literally want each other dead. In fact, they explicitly and continuously promise each other that they’ll see them dead before long. Also…when shooting each other is foreplay you know they are enemies that burn for each other.
Secrets and Betrayals
The last 10% was action-packed, tense, gut-wrenching, and unpredictable. There were SEVERAL plot points I didn’t see coming and will take me a long time to unpack what transpired. I was sobbing. I discovered so many new creative curses I had in my arsenal because…WTF. The best books linger with you. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long while.
If you love dystopian romance and recently enjoyed Conform, this is definitely a book you will want to pick up! - SarahThis book was such a ride, with so many layers to unpack and marinate in4.25 ????
This book was such a ride, with so many layers to unpack and marinate in. This one will sit with me for a while
First of all H. M. Wolfe’s writing is amazing. She paints an incredible picture and it flows so well. The vivid detail had me completely immersed & I could absolutely see this book having a screen adaption—and honestly it should.
The characters in this book are incredible. It’s hard not to love the main characters, especially Shadera—she’s such a strong woman, that literally walks through h*ll to protect the ones she loves. The side characters really stole the show for me though. Callum and Lira were my absolute favorites and I couldn’t get enough of them. The romance between the two of them was top tier, and I ate up any scene they were in
The feminine rage and female empowerment in this book gave me goosebumps. With a tyrannical patriarchy of a government that directly reflects the corrupt systems in the US, to watch women rise up and face their oppressors was so moving. The women in this book are truly inspirational.
I did feel like the pacing was a bit slow for me at times. There were plenty of side quest moments that kept you engaged, but for the most part it was one big buildup throughout the entire book that really pays off at the end. I don’t mind a slow burn but I think the Instagram hype gave me different expectations and it was a slower burn than I expected
The ending of this book was diabolical. I did see some things coming and had a feeling about one event in particular but there were so many other twists and turns that took me by surprise. Watching the entire plot unravel in the last few chapters was such a great time to read and I’m left with so many questions and cannot wait for book two
