  • Sad Novel About a Sad Man
Szalay's story is about a man whose life controls him and who goes with the flow. It is moving and keeps the reader's interest. It reminds me of Richard Ford or even John Updike. Insightful and introspective comes to mind. Overall not a happy book but one that.makes.you reflect on.your own life. Well written.
  • Okay, but not extraordinary
My honest review is that nothing really happens in the first 60% of the book. "Yeah," "okay," and "I don't know" comprise most of the dialogue (admittedly, Istvan a bit dimwitted and not overly conversant). I almost put the book to the side but kept thinking there must be a payoff. There is but I found some of it to be a bit false (the OD scene did not hang true). Ending was satisfactory but I didn't find anything extraordinary in this novel.
  • Frankly, the book has s pace that suggests paint drying and overall dr
Depicts a man who lets life happen to him rather than making life ha
Pen. He has no ambition and is totally boring.
The story moves at a snail's pace. I do not recommend it.
  • Brilliant
Loved it. So much is captured in such lean prose. It is possible that this works best for readers who know some of the locations and situations, or at least the cinematic conventions associated with them. Okay?
  • Surprising
An inside look at male sexuality across a lifetime. Honest and exact. Incredible plot. Protagonist has very little awareness of his own emotions. A bit like Camus’ “L’Etranger”.
  • Brillian story telling.
David Salazy 's writing is as brilliant and spare as Hemingway's and Kafka's. THis book tells a story of a man who stumbles through life hitting highs and lows as if he is sleep walking through life without thinking of feeling. The effect is powerful as we watch Istevan face formidable odds and unexpected gains. But in the end this nihlistic man meets the fate we expect. I couldn't put this book down.
  • Good
    Paced good, interesting read .
  • Raw, Honest, and Worth Every Page
Flesh is a raw, unflinching exploration of a man who spends most of his life unable to name what he feels — yet somehow, as readers, we feel every one of those emotions for him. The writing is deceptively simple, but there’s nothing simple about the experience of reading it. Yes, some parts are graphic and uncomfortable, but push through. It’s worth it all the way to the last word. I highly recommend it.
