  • It's good purchase, immediate seller response.
The item was received in a well-packaged box and is in good condition. Ran hardware diagnostics. All components passed. Later, one hard disk failed and contacted the seller (PCSP), and the seller immediately sent a replacement hard disk. So far, For the price of $560, I am satisfied with the purchase. Few things to note. It is R730xd, not R730. The remaining disk spaces were left empty without the caddies.
  • A great way to get a lot of storage
I wanted to use this server as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) system. It's very well suited for that. The system is designed so the hard drives and I believe even the dual power supplies can be hot-swapped, meaning that you can replace a bad one without even shutting the system down.

There is a catch though; I wanted to install the Linux-based TrueNAS operating system but didn't want to waste nearly all of a 4 terabyte hard drive on it (this isn't specific to any operating system). Small NVMe M.2 SSD's are inexpensive now, but the motherboard in this system doesn't support them directly. Add-in cards for these drives are also inexpensive, but the system can't boot from that hardware. It is possible, however, to install bootloader software on a USB flash drive and boot the system from that. I used one that only sticks out about a quarter of an inch and inserted it in one of the rear USB ports where it won't be seen, hit, or pulled out by anybody. It seems weird but it works.
  • Failed Hard drive, internal parts breaking, Front USB not working and missing drive covers
First, I want to say that I received an R730xd instead of the R730 which was a nice surprise.

    I purchased 2 servers.

    First server:

Only 3 stars due to the front USB not working and not receiving a registration code so I can prove ownership with Dell to upgrade iDrac (comes with express, I want enterprise). I have to use the back USBs to install an OS and given this is for a home lab... this is going to be a major pain due to my setup. Plus, I expected everything to be in working order as this is what the renewed program is about, everything working properly.

It is also missing 4 of the hard drives and those bays are just empty. While I do not expect all the drives to be installed (hard drive space is not maxed out), I would expect a cover, or at least mention there are no covers for the hard drive bays that are missing drives.

Not having a working USB on the front is an issue for me so I will be reaching out to support to see what my options are.

I also cannot transfer ownership with Dell to use Dell Digital Locker. Be warned if you are wanting to do this.

    Second server:

Missing drive covers too. That's fine really, I purchased more drives so I just go the mounts too.

Two of the Internal plastic guards broke when I touch them. I mean touch, not push or pull. I just put my finger on them and they broke. Nothing too crazy but insanely brittle. This was the PCI cover in the back and the airflow one behind the fans. The airflow one was only the button that broken. Lifting it out was fine. The PCI was so fragile that I took it out completely and it just fell apart in my hands.

Less than 30 days of running and already have a hard drive failure. I saw this already so I expected this. Just wanted to make note that I had the same issue. I'll be replacing the drives as they were not in the best shape (connectors were corroded but looked like they were wire brushed clean.

UPDATE: I reached out to Amazon support to get registration code and about USB issue and they relayed it to the seller... 3 days and no response on anything so not sure if anything is being done.

UPDATE2: Amazon support has failed to do anything about the registration code, just be aware that you cannot register these to your Dell Locker. As for the front USB not working, Support was useless, just ordered a replacement. When replacing, the issue was the wire was snapped at the connection point. Like when you push it down without releasing the connector first.

Overall, I am happy with these servers. Are they perfect? No, but they are good enough for the price.
  • Good value, but R730XD
As others have noted, I received a R730xd rather than the R730 advertised. Not a big deal for my use-case, but may be for others, and returns of these bulky monsetrs can be challenging. A few nice surprises though are that the unit included a 2x1G RJ45 + 2x10G SFP network daughter card as well as 2.5" rear flex bay backplane, and was licensed for iDrac8 Enterprise. Overall, awesome value for the price.
  • Running great!
The server is running great, as a new one. I recommend this server!
  • Well worth it
this server came quickly, in excellent shape and condition, worked right out of the box, outstanding value for the price vs a new one just like it. will be buying again from seller
  • Outstanding Quality and Service
I was a bit skeptical about buying refurbished, I have always bought new. This looked like a very good deal. I ordered one. Everything was delivered as promised. Package materials were way beyond expectation! Excellent packing and shipping! The PowerEdge server worked PERFECT! Everything was very clean. I ran the diagnostics - ALL PASSED! I went through the configuration - SETUP PERFECT! I didn't have to make any changes. Received it with Windows Server 2016 Standard (EVAL). Scratched that and installed Windows 2019 Datacenter. Zero issues. I will definitely be a repeat customer. Very good experience!
  • An "upgrade" and a mixed bag
I ordered this server and ended up receiving an R730xd instead. When contacted, the company called it an upgrade, which it technically is, but there were some differences in hardware. The network setup came with 2 SFP ports and 2 1GbE ports, instead of the 4 1GbE ports I was expecting. On top of that, 3 of the (now) 12 front drive bays were completely empty. Not a serious issue but one of the reasons I went with this server is because it would have come with a full set of caddys.

Out of the 8 hard drives included, 3 have already failed and 2 had arrived already in S.M.A.R.T failure which quickly progressed to read failure, something I would have expected the company to check before shipping the server. That said, the server itself has been running great and was super clean, almost like it was brand new. And the way it was shipped was impressive as well, inside a giant block of foam that left no potential for damage in shipping.

Overall, it’s a decent deal, but I do expect to receive the actual items I order configured in the way they're listed and with drives that aren't in pre-failure even if they're used.
