- Ceb3114Faster and easier to deploy than an extinguisherYears ago I had a fire in my microwave. I was cooking a squash on a paper towel that, back then, must have had some micro metal in it, because it caught fire and I turned around and saw my microwave looking like a fireplace! Back then, I grabbed a kitchen towel, flooded it with water, opened the door and tossed it in, and it extinguished the flame. These blankets work the same way, without the water.
I bought these for my friend who's twins are beginning to cook - age about 10 - and it's simple and easy enough that they can use it if ever needed. We had a practice session (no flames) after they opened them (it was a gift), so they'd know the process and not panic. We went through a simulation a few times until they were comfortable with it, especially the motion of laying the blanket down over the flame by moving it from front to back on the stove so the blanket protects your arms from flames. I felt it was important that they know this aspect and not panic and throw it wildly over the stove. They know it now and will have no issues if they need it. Let's hope never.
I also bought myself one for our house as my mother can not use a fire extinguisher at this point. It's too heavy and she's not strong enough to pull the pin without difficulty. This solves the problem. And then I bought a bunch more and gave them to relatives for Christmas gifts.
On You Tube there are videos of cottages, called bothies, in the UK that are shelters for hikers, open to all. Most have wood stoves in them for warmth. In every bothy I've seen, there is one of these hanging on the wall. They never need recharging, aren't heavy to use, and are quicker than an extinguisher to deploy. My stepmom gifted all of us (adult and married) kids these for Christmas because she said an Instagram ad got her. We all teased her a tiny bit about the mom gift, but I came home and put it next to our fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Fast forward not even a year later and we are about to fry fish outside, I wasn't watching the grill burner that was turned on too hot, and a huge oil fire tower erupted while my stepmom was over - whole pan on fire, flames above the fence line.
I went inside to grab the fire extinguisher (messy) and saw this instead. Very quickly opened it up, tossed it over the pan after I had shut off the propane, and the fire was immediately reduced and fully covered by the blanket. I left it on for about a couple hours to cool down before disgarding everything.
Blanket had no holes, but definitely was blackened. THIS THING IS AMAZING! This turned an event into a non-event. The fire was so tall and hot, it burned through our café lights, but the blanket was durable, thick, and lightweight enough to easily toss over everything and not get damaged (although I did still toss it after).
I immediately repurchased 2 more of these and had them delivered to me less than 12 HOURS after this initial incident. I will be gifting these to everyone I can think of from now on. Shortly after opening the shipping package and pulling these out, I started itching. I'm currently getting ready to take a shower.
I believe that these are covered with fiberglass fibers that contaminate what ever is close to them pulling them out of the package.
I wiped mine down so I would continue to have this issue.
It does concern me for when I'll need to use them though.
If your camping. You don't always have a good way to clean yourself.
