Top reviews from the United States

  • Witty, fast-paced, great plot
We Solve Murders is one of the best mystery novels I’ve read recently. The tone is lighthearted and humorous throughout, striking a perfect balance between suspense and entertainment. Even while the stakes are high, the book never loses its playful charm.

The cast of characters is a standout feature. Each one feels distinct, with their own quirks, voices, and mannerisms that make them memorable and fun to follow. The banter between them kept me smiling just as much as the twists kept me guessing.

The chapters are short and snappy, which makes the story move at a brisk pace. I found myself saying “just one more chapter” again and again—and then suddenly it was well past midnight.

As for the mystery itself, it’s packed with clever turns. Every time I thought I had the answer, another reveal flipped things on its head. It kept me engaged from start to finish.

Overall, We Solve Murders is witty, tightly written, and endlessly entertaining—a mystery that delivers both laughs and genuine surprises. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a quick-moving, character-driven whodunit with plenty of twists.
  • good fun
Fun cozy mystery with lovable offbeat characters and a lot of action. Good vacation read. Great narration on the audible version.
  • They Solve Murders
To me, Richard Osman’s WE SOLVE MURDERS is better than his over-hyped “The Thursday Murder Club,” (which is popular enough there’s a TV series about it). Over 165,000 ratings on Goodreads average to a 4.07 rating. That’s very solid approval.

Osman’s style, it seems, is to drop the reader in with no context, no information on whether the characters are good or bad or how they fit into the overall story (and there are many characters). There are 101 short chapters. Whose POV each chapter takes changes almost with each new chapter. The characters’ relationships and the plot do come into focus as you read further into it.

The first two pages tells us about the mysterious Francois Loubet, who is an international money launderer and the evil mastermind behind all the deadly shenanigans, but no one knows who he is or his true name.

Chapter 1 introduces us to Andrew Fairbanks, Instagram influencer, who we learn later in the chapter “has been shot in the head, tied to a rope, and thrown from a yacht bobbing about in the Atlantic.” As a consequence, he is dead. No one else is on the yacht, but a leather bag containing nearly one million dollars is.

Chapter 2 introduces two important characters. The main protagonist is Amy Wheeler. Amy works for Maximum Impact Solutions, a company that, among other things, provides security and protection services for the rich and famous. Amy loves her job – every day is an adrenaline rush. Her current duty is to protect Rosie D’Antonio, the second-best-selling novelist in the world. A man she named in a book didn’t appreciate it and has sworn to kill her. Rosie’s attitude toward life is she’d rather be murdered than bored. That makes Amy’s job more challenging, but the novel more interesting.

Three Maximum Impact clients (including the afore-mentioned Andrew Fairbanks) have been murdered, all three within a few miles of where Amy was working at the time. Amy’s boss believes Amy might be the next intended victim. After she dispatches an unexpected would-be assassin, and her boss goes missing, Amy calls her father-in-law, Steve Wheeler, for assistance.

Steve Wheeler, retired after 25 years in the police force, in contrast to Amy, eschews adrenaline-inducing situations, and is content to live peacefully in his small English town. He initially refuses to join Amy in South Carolina. He doesn’t like flying and definitely has no desire to go to the United States (He worries about the alligators). But he goes anyway.

We Solve Murders is a fast-moving novel, with insights, humor and deaths.

I got a kick out of the last line in the novel (2 sentences), but it’s truly effective only after reading the novel.

My favorite character is Ferdy, a very minor character appearing only briefly in the story, who is a taxi driver/politician on the island of St. Lucia. Amy tells Ferdy they want to meet a rich and powerful drug dealer named Nelson Nunez. Amy hopes Nunez knows who killed one of her agency’s murdered clients. Rosie wants drugs, the kind you can’t buy at a pharmacy. While driving, Ferdy waves to people who happily wave back. Why is he so popular?: Because “I am a politician” says Ferdy. Rosie asks him why he is driving a taxi if he is a politician. Ferdy’s classic response: “Because I always lose. If I’d won, they’d hate me. That’s politics.”

Later Amy asks Ferdy how he knows Nelson Nunez. Responds Ferdy, “He’s the one who always beats me in the elections.” Cracked me up.

(The character of Ferdy, by the way, was inspired by a real-life taxi driver/politician named Jn Pierre.)
My rating: 5 Stars. I was going to give it 4 stars but after reading my review, I raised it to 5 stars.
  • Richard Osman Slays Again!
We Solve Murders pairs a delightful new cast of characters with Osman's trademark wit, charm and unrivaled ability to write an intricate, heartfelt comedy mystery thriller. You won't want to put this novel down and withdrawal will set in as soon as you do!
  • Great Read
Could NOT put this book down. GREAT read. Different story lines running parallel and linked together. The best mind candy ever.
  • Fun new characters
I enjoyed this book much more than I expected since I am quite enarmoured with The Thursday Murder Club. The cadence was different, the voices fresh and new but all the elements that make TTMC so delightful are present. It is rare that a writer can successfully make this kind of departure. I can’t wait for the next book!
  • Had to read it twice!
Details galore, overlapping and weaving; dancing with ever tempting glimmers of truth. Second time through, I finally caught the strands and saw the big picture. Entertainment for the mind, loaded with quirky characters. Lovely stuff.
  • A hilarious thriller -- new genre of fiction
Hilarious, page-turning suspense -- what a combo. Osman delivers on a wacky premise in such an entertaining way that I can only hope there will be many sequels.
