- RomReExcellent New Series! This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me was excellent.
Maggie was easily my favorite part of the book. She’s competent, but not in that eye-rolling way where the heroine is somehow all-knowing, all-powerful, and always ten steps ahead of everyone else. She has real strengths, but she also has limits, blind spots, and areas where she needs other people. That balance made her feel capable, believable, and human.
What really made her stand out to me, though, was her grit. And not the shallow kind of grit that gets talked about a lot, but the kind most people will never be able to prove. Maggie the Undying is as horrific a title as it sounds – she dies and she comes back. There is an instance where this horrifying power leads to a scene that while not particularly graphic, demonstrates her stubborn resilience. That says more about her than any number of clever lines or victory scenes ever could. Her resilience has been tested in the worst way imaginable, and that gives her the weight and credibility that really stayed with me.
The cast was another huge strength. There are a lot of moving parts here, but the characters add richness and texture instead of feeling like clutter. The world feels alive because the people in it feel alive.
One thing I really loved was how Maggie’s discoveries often felt like they were mirroring the reader’s – that moment of putting the puzzle pieces together and screaming as you realize two things are related. As new secrets came out and different threads started connecting, it was genuinely satisfying to watch her make sense of things at the same time I was.
The romance between Maggie and R was also very well done. It felt organic, and I was invested in it very quickly.
And honestly, for a book carrying this much worldbuilding and exposition, I thought it handled the information really well. There are infodumps, sure, but they’re usually brief, digestible, and placed where they need to be. The book gives you enough to understand the scene without grinding everything to a halt.
…and the ending.
That was not a ‘baby’ cliffhanger. Ilona Andrews usually gives you a story that feels satisfyingly complete, even when there’s more coming. This ending, however, was a full-on mouth-drop moment and I was not emotionally prepared for it at all.
Overall, I loved this and am now in the terrible position of needing the next book immediately. - ChellbellThe best Fantasy I’ve read in years…The premise is one that most avid readers have thought about….what if you woke up inside the world of your favorite book?
I read daily and enjoy many genres. I try not to get too caught up in the various book marketing categories, but this is truthfully the best FANTASY book I’ve read in years. It’s just plain FUN!
It has everything I love. A great plot. The world building is wonderfully nuanced. The first chapter grabbed me right away. I felt like I’d been dropped straight into this world by page two… soaking wet, hungry and freezing. The action and pacing is snappy all the way through.
The characters are beautifully well developed. We get a deep cast of all the favorites - good guys, bad guys and some we’re not so sure about, too. You will care about these people and invest your heart!
The romance is lovely……Smoldering, not gratuitous.
Perhaps my favorite thing about the author’s voice/ tone is the HUMOR. Make no mistake…This is a serious fantasy with danger, scheming and high stakes, but it’s peppered with funny scenes and really fantastic dialogue. (I do enjoy a bit of snark!)
If you are on the fence, BUY the book….or get on the list to borrow at your local library. You won’t be disappointed in your money or time spent.
And To Ilona Andrews:
Thanks from all of us who have felt that need “to live in someone else’s head” for a bit. - NicoleAn epic born before our eyesEver start reading a book and realize that you are reading the first chapters of a book you will never forget? This isn't a romance, this is a tale spun into art that clinches your heart, rips you out of your safe mooring, and throws you into a tidal wave that you know is the start of an epic fantasy. The book follows Maggie, real world normal extraordinaire as she is dumped into the pages of her favorite book. But this is no trope, she is left on the street for days and must claw her way out of the mire to save the characters she was so emotionally invested in. Trick is, she realizes that this isn't just a book, this is a world beyond the pages she read for years. I can't wait to read this again. I'm more a demure member of BDH but foe the first time I'm seriously considering spending money I don't have on the hardback art edition. I wish I could forget this book just to read it foe the first time again.
- LisaAddicting New WorldExcellent beginning to a new series for Ilona Andrews. It’s a different type of book than their usual, but it has their normal wit, exciting plot, and strong, well rounded characters. There is political intrigue, plot twists that surprised me, plenty of danger and fighting, victories and defeats, and so many characters I’m glad it’s a trilogy. It does have a lot of world building, especially early on, but it is essential to understand this world. I liked the world building because it comes out like it would if you were thrown into your favorite, oft read series. You will remember things in chunks. It felt normal for the situation.
The book does wrap up some of the plots, but the story will continue. Is there a cliffhanger? Yes. This is an epic fantasy series. There was no way the story was ending in book 1. - T. RevellThe Wait for this Book did not kill me…It was worth it, I loved it. I can’t wait for the next one and I need to read it all again tomorrow to catch all the details I’m sure I missed in the devouring pace of the first read through. Wow, great work … and just wow… if you like fantasy mixed with a contemporary heroine at all then you’ll enjoy this. Give it a shot & then read all the rest of the Ilona Andrews catalogue… join the BDH (Book Devouring Hoard), you won’t regret it, promise.

You will enjoy this read and want the next book!!
