  • Are YOUR Eyes Wide Shut?
If you're reading this for the presentation of the film, I gotta say it looks and sounds fantastic! Terrific transfer. It is a Kubrick film, after all.

It's a great shame we'll never see his original, intended version of it. Kubrick was a perfectionist, but the editing in this movie is definitely 'off'. I don't think this is his intended version. I think he was trying to tell us about elite secret societies that traffic underage kids (think Geoffrey Epstein & the Islanders). I also think that after Kubrick died, the studio cut some scenes and re-edited it. Eyes Wide Shut is still fantastic, but you can tell something's missing. On a tinfoily side note- some people think Kubrick might've helped film the moon landing.. but who knows? Dead men tell no tales.

Kubrick died of a massive heart attack 4 days after showing Eyes Wide Shut to his family.
  • Great 4k, rating reflects Amazon pre order
Pre ordered this and knew I wouldn't get it when it wasn't shipped morning of release date. Luckily found a copy at local store for same price. Image has more grain than I expected, but the color and detail is amazing (this still I took with cellphone should demonstrate well- note the color cast on center channel). Everytime i give amazon a chance, they drop the ball. Instead of reaching out and making this right- review probably doesn't get posted. Will continue to buy my big ticket items elsewhere, since this seller can't handle a simple movie preorder (read other reviews, I'm not the only one).
  • Kubrick invites us to delve into the intricate layers of human relationships with his final film
Kubrick invites us to delve into the intricate layers of human relationships with his final film, Eyes Wide Shut.

What is Kubrick trying to open our eyes to? I think we’ll be asking ourselves such questions till the end of time. There is a frozen-glass-of-water-at-the-beginning-of the-Napoleon-screenplay level of symbolism on display in this one folks.

The secret password “fidelio” that shows up early in the film is derived from the Latin root “fidelis,” translating to “faithful.” Interestingly, it is also the title of Ludwig van Beethoven’s sole opera, where Fidelio is a character who adopts a male guise to rescue her beloved… That’s just a single word in this nearly 3-hour long runtime.

4 days before his death, Kubrick presented a final cut of the film to Warner Bros, with all but the film’s score and soundtrack left unfinished. Kubrick introduced this film to the executives at Warner as his “masterpiece”.

I wanted to share some pieces of trivia regarding the preproduction of this film, for there are many peculiarities and irregularities here…

To prepare his stars for their roles, Stanley Kubrick had joined psychoanalysis sessions with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman where he had them confess their fears about relations and their real-life marriage. According to Kidman, it was brutally honest, and blurred the line between themselves and their fictional characters. Both of them have vowed to never reveal what they discussed during these sessions. [IMDB]

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman even signed open-ended contracts. They agreed to work on this project until Stanley Kubrick released them from it, however long that turned out to be. [IMDB]

Like, what…? That’s just the tip of the EWS iceberg though. I implore you to research this movie’s many theories, pieces of trivia, controversies, and conspiracies for yourself.

As we traverse the film’s enigmatic corridors, it feels like witnessing a surreal exploration of relationships, with echoes of Scientology woven into the tapestry, perhaps?

The film’s brilliance lies in its meticulous craftsmanship; every frame a carefully orchestrated visual symphony. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s performances, shaped by Kubrick’s unconventional methods, deliver a raw and haunting authenticity. I simply don’t think people were ready for this film when it came out. Other than Scorsese, of course.

Kubrick’s final film becomes a cinematic journey that not only entertains, but also prompts deep introspection into the complexities of love and fidelity. Eyes Wide Shut is more than a film; It’s a showcase of the Auteur’s relentless pursuit of cinematic perfection.
  • Eyes Wide Shut fans rejoice!
As a massive fan of this film, all I can say is this release is a dream come true. I have waited 15 years since the original Blu-ray came out and honestly the wait was worth it. Please do not let online negativity dissuade you from getting this disc. Most likely, this is as good as we will ever get eyes wide shut on home video.

We have the original director of photography supervising and approving the look of the film. We have the best in the industry, Fidelity in motion, handling the encode. Criterion have their hits and misses, but this is one of their all-time greatest releases. The grain is handled beautifully and the color is a sight to behold. Just keep in mind that the goal is to retain the look of real film, not contemporary digital video!

As for the anger and frustration about Amazon's pre-order issues, I completely understand. There is an industry-wide problem with keeping up with consumer demand for physical media. This happened because all of the major studios reduced their disc production capacity when they went all in on streaming services several years back. Now, they are unable to make enough discs for all of the pre-orders. That's why you see limited releases and shortages. I'm not sure what the solution is, but it is a problem. I had pre-ordered this from Amazon back in early October but ultimately I walked into another store and picked it up on the release day. So, I guess I was one of the lucky ones who didn't have to wait till next year to see this disc. However, that doesn't change the fact that this wonderful film finally has the home release that it has deserved for years. Enjoy.
  • Preordering is pointless
Great movie and wish I could watch this new version. Last time I preorder anything from Amazon. Once again I preorder months in advance and receive nothing. What’s the point?
  • Stunning transfer
This restoration is stunning and the closest I’ve seen the film look to how I saw it on 35mm in 2019. Don’t listen to these people, we all get demo-itis, this is a gorgeous presentation of Stanley’s final masterwork.
  • no clu
Love the film. Have no clue about this edition because it isn't released for another month.
  • EWS in 4K Criterion…nuff said
My favorite film ever. Endlessly watchable and endlessly intriguing. This is the grail of Criterion 4K for me I am so excited!
