  • Excellent Propaganda
Landman is a series written by a man, mainly for men, about men working in the West Texas oil industry. I'll narrow it down further: it's a series best suited to absolutely delight red state oil men in their 60s and older. Overall, it's entertaining and mostly fast-paced. Billy Bob Thornton proves once again that his charisma and outstanding talent can elevate any project. Jacob Lofland is flawless. Ali Larter and Michelle Randolph must have understood that their lengthy screen roles as 'dumb blonde bimbos' were meant to try to revive and justify a decades-old, degrading female stereotype. Certainly, a lot of screen time was used up having the camera aimed at their female body parts. As well, their inexplicable, contrived scenes with the nursing home residents are beyond cringeworthy. I don't know why these two, reportedly very intelligent, women agreed to their roles, but that was their choice.
The series somewhat sympathetically shows who, as it historically has always been, is in charge -- a small number of ultra-wealthy, aging white men who want to maintain their power over others. Especially true in Texas. This isn't a judgment; it's just how things are. I'm a lifelong Texan. Lived near Midland for 20 years before moving to a Texas metro area that is supposed to be safer for women.
Sheridan's writing does seem to perpetuate various outdated negative stereotypes, but I don't think it's due to lazy writing. More likely, it is intentional. Whether or not the fossil fuel industry is funding this series, it's still worth watching to see Billy Bob Thornton set loose to do what he does best.
  • Awesome series, easy to binge watch
This is just a lot of fun, good story, Billy Bob is hilarious at times. Watched it all, twice, loaned it out to two friends that loved it. Can't wait for Season 2 DVD
  • 2025 Top 3 series. it being #1

  • Great series. If you liked Yellowstone you'll like this
    Great series. Humor and drama.
  • Great series, can’t wait to season two
This is a great series. Can’t wait to buy season two. Enjoy all the actors in this series. Another hit from Taylor Sheridan.
  • Finally back to Normal!
The great American return! What a fresh breath of a show after the amount of shows that diverted from story telling into the the ideology of 2020 to 2024- I applauded paramount forgoing back to normal!
  • Great, gritty show. Terrific lead actors. One flaw that periodically mars everything.
Gritty, brutal, well-told story of the modern oil business. Okay, not entirely realistic, but you'll be able to overlook that for the sake of the action and intrigue. Billy Bob Thornton is perfect as Tommy Norris, the weary, grizzled, but smart and tough west Texas oilfield boss. Jacob Lofland is intriguing as his young son, Cooper, who is inexperienced, sensitive, and brutally bullied by fellow oilfield roustabouts, but who just keeps pushing through it all with the persistence of the Energizer bunny.

I've taken one point off because of the series' biggest flaw, which seems to be a weakness with creator Taylor Sheridan (because the same issue also inflicts his other quality drama, Yellowstone). The two main female characters, Tommy's wife and teenage daughter, are nothing but bad caricatures -- aggressively flaunting their sexuality while psychologically brutalizing the men in their life. I'm sure such women really exist, but if you were to believe Sheridan, there's hardly any other kind. (The big exception in Landman is Paulina Chavez as a young widow whose life becomes enmeshed with Cooper's; she's a great character.) Yes, I'm giving a woman's view of a man's show, but my husband finds these ludicrous, cartoonish, sexpot b***hes as cringeworthy as I do.

Still, other than that, great show. While it's not overtly political, libertarians and conservatives will also appreciate the occasional hardcore, politically incorrect statements about the necessity and reality of operating a dirty business in the modern world.
  • Dysfunctional family. Like most of us have.
This is a great show. Its the first thing I have liked Billy Bob Thornton in. I hope they keep up the good work.
