- CHMESEGAL'S BEST FILMMY OPINION OF THIS FILM:
The clear consensus is that "Under Seige" was Segal's finest film. It topped box office charts and made more money than any other "critic-prescreen-film" of the time! Steven Segal, particularly in his leaner, younger, years, provided some of the best real-as-life martial arts moves ever seen on film. Of the many entertaining movies he has played, really only four or five stand out as greats, and this is one of them.
FILM BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The USS Alabama museum ship stood in for most of the Missouri sequences, and the USS Drum portrayed the North Korean submarine.
Based on an original screenplay by J. F. Lawton, Under Siege was rated 'R' ('Restricted') by the MPAA. The UK release was edited for violence to get a more commercial 15 certificate. Ten seconds were removed from the film, chiefly from the workshop fight and a shot of Seagal ripping out a man's throat.
Seagal got into a heated argument that escalated into violence with an extra named Tyler Combs. Combs repeatedly made sexual advances towards Seagal. Gary Busey broke the fight up.
The film makes extensive use of the IntroVision process, a variation of front projection that allows realistic three-dimensional interaction of foreground characters with projected backgrounds without the heavy cost of traditional bluescreen effects. The technique was also used in the films Outland, Megaforce, Army of Darkness and Andrew Davis' The Fugitive.
Its opening weekend, Under Siege made $15,760,003 from 2,042 theaters, with a $7,717 average. From there, it went on to make $83,563,139. Worldwide, it made $156,563,139. At the time, it was the most successful film ever that had not been screened for any critics prior to its release.
The movie was also a critical success, with many hailing Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey as the villains. Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 75% based on reviews from 24 critics. This is the only Steven Seagal movie to be certified fresh on Rottentomatoes.com. It's also the only Seagal movie to receive Academy Awards nomination (though it did not win).
After seeing this film, Harrison Ford was so impressed by Andrew Davis' directing work that he immediately signed on to play Dr. Richard Kimble in Davis' adaptation of The Fugitive.[citation needed]
The film was nominated for two Academy Awards; Best Sound Effects Editing and for Best Sound (Donald O. Mitchell, Frank A. Montaño, Rick Hart and Scott D. Smith).
My thanks to Wikipedia for all of the above background information.
STORY:
Andrew Davis directed this exciting thriller starring Steven Seagal, sans ponytail, and featuring electric, over-the-top performances by Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones. This action saga takes place on the battleship USS Missouri, about to be decommissioned from service after a visit from George Bush. When Bush departs the vessel, a band of terrorists overcome the remaining skeleton crew and take over the ship, under the ruse of holding a surprise birthday party for the ship's commander, Captain Adams (Patrick O'Neal). The band is led by Strannix (Jones), a disgruntled ex-CIA operative, and his right-hand man, the psychotic Krill (Busey). The terrorists plan to steal the ship's store of nuclear warheads, transfer them to a stolen North Korean submarine, and sell them to a Middle Eastern country. Unfortunately for Strannix, he has overlooked the ship's cook, Casey Ryback (Seagal). Ryback is a much-honored Navy SEAL who, because of a minor scandal, is quietly completing his twenty-year tour in the galley of the Missouri. Forced into action, Ryback, along with the woman who jumped out of Captain Adams' birthday cake (Erika Eleniak), knocks off the bad guys one-by-one while crawling inside the bowels of the ship.

- rogetPure Guy Action FilmIn my opinion this is one of the best action films ever. Seagal was in his prime; the set and storyline are great; the cast was awesome, including Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey; Miss July and her awesome figure jumping out of the birthday cake. She says to Seagal: are you a special forces guy or something? No I'm just the cook (typical Seagal understatement) and she gets gloomy about the terrible situation they are in. But pretty soon his homemade bomb goes off in the microwave and takes out some of the bad guys. Seagal is really a Navy Seal who got demoted and became the chef on the ship, and of course he saves the day--nuclear holocaust.

- teols2016Action with Some Flare...This movie goes beyond your standard action thriller, even if that's what it is. I can't put my finger on it, but there's an effort in the feature that just makes it good. I mean, this is the film that brought actor Tommy Lee Jones and director Andrew Davis together for their later project "The Fugitive", my favorite film of all time. So I owe a lot to this film. Tommy Lee Jones played a wonderfully insane terrorist...much better than his later portrayal of Two-Face in "Batman Forever". And our action star, Steven Seagal, was better than just another action star. He actually gave this action hero a personality, even if the man's concerns about his cooking were sometimes annoying and some of his lines were cheesy and cliché. And who wouldn't want Playboy playmate Erika Eleniak as his leading lady...she was a bit more than that, Thank God. While the film had its necessary "actiony" moments, it told a good story underneath all that. I can actually believe the circumstances that put Seagal's character in his position in the beginning of the film. Overall, everything made sense in this film and nothing was put in it just for the sake of having it in an action film with these big stars. Perhaps that's what I should put my finger on. Perhaps that's the effort that made this film so good. As far as standard action flicks go, this is above average and one of my favorites. Enjoy.
