- sexy dancerBest movie version. This is the best movie version so far.
Very gritty, emotional and realistic. - JGood MovieI bought this as a Christmas gift for my brother-in-law. He asked for this title, so I assume he likes the movie.
- David A. GreeneRaw, powerful, superb anti-war masterpiece. This ever so hard-hitting film deals with the darkest aspects of warfare with a blunt realism that the very respectable 1930s American adaptation of the story could never have attempted. All the performances are impeccable and not to be missed. This is not some glib, entertainment vehicle, but a serious examination of the madness that was once called The Great War. The Blu Ray is of the highest technical quality!
- Marc not MarkThis updated version is the best, so far. This is truly a very well done WW1 movie. Attention to the characters' emotions as they go from blind joy of patriotism and wanting to join in the fight for their country, to the bitter end, of seeing the devastation and senselessness of what is going on, as people needlessly die and are driven further into destruction. Two earlier versions/renditions of this story exist, which I didn't realize, until after I had purchased this Blu-Ray version of this newer re-make. I own the original black and white movie on regular DVD format and had wanted a HD version. I had not seen the movie adaptation made in the seventies, but can say with confidence this is the better version, out of the two I now own. Based on some other information found in a number of reviews, etc., people seem to find this newer film more watchable and rather the best version, so far - I fully agree. Worth watching and buying, if you are a fan of war movies and can appreciate a bit of a heavier themed plot. Emotionally deep and not a feel good action romp, though there is plenty of action, as well as some light hearted scenes, to show the humanity, even during times of duress and despair.
- SparklzVisually stunning. This is one of the best WW1 movies I’ve seen.
I had to watch it in German with subtitles, after a couple of minutes of listening to the german soldiers talking in very English Cockney accents with the audio set to English. Dreadful.
Listening to them talk german gave the movie a far more realistic feel.
This movie from the german perspective is visually stunning, with solid acting performances that had me loving it from beginning to end.
This is a visual masterpiece. - L. P. YoungOutstandingThis is one of, or the best WW1 history I've seen. It is substantially changed from the original movie and book. It could have been retitled closer to the 1936 Im Trommelfeuer der Westfront. Still, it had some of the key scenes of the original i.e., the death of the French Poli in the shell crater and emotional impact on the young men. The ending I feel was weaker than the original sniper ending which was so emotionally powerful. I wish that the original with Lew Ayers could have been filmed with today's quality and I would rate them as a toss-up for the best war movie yet.
- SparkiePretty Factual and Graphic... Not for younger audiences! This is a very good movie that reflects the real effects of War... A Lot of casualties and is incredibly graphic. This is not a good movie to watch over dinner, but seems to be quite factual. This really shows what War is like! This movie is quite Long! To me it also shows how the Russian Government is not willing to support their men! They seem to play being numbers and accept high losses! The movie is incredibly Brutal!
- Theron A. AkersA powerful statement against warThis movie is based on the book of the same name, which was made into a movie in 1930. It differs from the book and the earlier movie in that there are alternate scenes of the French and German diplomats engaged in talks for an armistice. The story is basically that of German students who are persuaded by their professor to enlist to fight for the Fatherland and the Kaiser. They are initially enthused and cannot wait to kill French soldiers. They get a horrible awakening when they get to the trenches at the front lines - poison gas, barbed wire, and artillery bombardments. This is not an "Action" film, but rather the story of young men trying to keep their humanity and their sanity. One scene of a German stabbing a Frenchman and then having to watch him die is particularly heartbreaking. The photography is excellent, contrasting scenes of natural beauty with the horror of the trenches. Please do not let small children watch this movie. The movie was filmed in German. There is an English-dubbed soundtrack, but I prefer to watch it in the original German with English subtitles, which are easy to read.
