  • A Subtle Masterpiece
Despite always rooting for Cole, I wasn't the biggest fan of the Cole World and Born Sinner albums. The reason being, I've followed him since his mixtape days, and I noticed that he makes his best music when he's rapping about being a responsible man and taking care of his family... or when he's creating something with substance and meaning, as opposed to trying to make contemporary radio hits or battle rhymes (although he is an excellent wordsmith). With 2014 Forest Hills, I felt he'd began to gain greater control of his musical creativity as a producer. Previously, it seemed that he was merely learning to produce. However, it was definitely clear that he appreciated musicality and wasn't just trying to fit in. With 4 your Eyez Only, it appears to me that Cole has finally found himself completely as an artist. The interesting thing about this album is that it's mostly from the perspective of his dead homie (most people don't seem to realize that). It plays like an audio movie and is so interesting to listen to in its entirety that hearing any one song from it always makes me want to hear the entire album. If I may make a comparison, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly was a great audio journey that I gave a lot of praise, but I didn't revisit the album much in its entirety... there were just certain songs I liked. I don't have that issue with 4 Your Eyez Only. I've already listened to this album more times than I listened to TPAB, because it just flows to well and is so interesting and... frankly, soothing. This album is like medicine to me. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. With all of that said, this is definitely my favorite album of his to date, so his line "I hear my old s*** and know I can top it" from False Prophets rings true, imo. 4 Your Eyez Only is a subtle masterpiece that not only excites me in and of itself, but makes me even more excited about whatever project Cole releases next, as this one proved that he's arrived as a complete artist.
  • great vinyl
one of my fave Cole albums had to get it

  • Masterful work of art from a Legend in our time.
Fan's who strictly listen to "turn up" music or haven't been around to listen to Cole's story and see his growth as an artist will say it's boring but when you've grown to truly respect an artists, the art and become a genuine fan you can listen and vibe to whatever music they put out even if it's not in tune with what's currently "popping" or hot in the mainstream and still appreciate it. This is a musical masterpiece and once you see and understand what the entire storyline of the ablum is about and it's purpose, it becomes much more fullfilling. I can truly say that Cole is a legend that we actually get to see during our lifetime but like he said
"To die a young legend or live a long life unfulfilled
'Cause you wanna change the world
But while alive you never will
'Cause they only feel you after you gone, or I've been told
And now I'm caught between bein' heard and gettin' old"

  • The Definition of ART in Hip Hop
Complete parallel to his life because it is the life of his fallen homeboy...the album is literally Art Imitating Life. THAT is what you call a 'Project'... It has a tone, theme, plot and story line to it, ultimately setting the moral responsibility of choices and how the affect any and everyone you're involved with. Literally just artistically slapped the game like... Wake Up! It really is deeper too though. It can viewed as a plea for society to wake up, tho Im white, Im in tune with reality, so not only is he doin this personally in honoring his friend, I think he's speaking to the black community, and society in general about choice, life, love and responsibility. Super dope. I can't listen to just one song, I have to play all 10 in a row or else I feel like Im missing out on parts of the story and that makes me listen to it more. #InstantClassic in my eyes.
  • He gets better as time progress
Never disappoints and always leave you wanting for more. J cole has that intelligence our rap society needs. He speaks the realness you can feel. He paints the hood life and tells you what's missing in the picture. He reflects to some of his life's hardships and what I love the most his joys. We are told through this album its more to life than what can be touched. This album he let's us into his feelings. It's unfortunate that part of this story had to do with a friend chasing the streets & when he gets that 'it's more to life' revelation.......it's too late. His daughter has to grow up wishing her daddy was with her. This album felt more like J cole reading a story to me. It's different than what he has given us before but nonetheless a great piece like all his others.
